Treating psychiatric patients for sleep disturbances can lead to improvements in their quality of life and mental health, but few mental health professionals receive thorough training on how best to assess common sleep complaints. So wrote John W. Winkelman, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and chief of the Sleep Disorders Clinical Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, in anarticle inJAMA Psychiatry.“Sleep is a powerful biological drive but, paradoxically, is easily perturbed by a variety of processes. Psychiatric illnesses are one such influence, and … many psychi...

The purpose of the present double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical study was to investigate the effects of Passionflower on polysomnographic sleep parameters in subjects with insomnia disorder. A total number 110 adult participants (mean age = 40.47 ± 11.68, Female = 53.6%) met the inclusion criteria of insomnia disorder according to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). After randomization, patients received either the Passionflower extract or the placebo for 2 weeks. Patients underwent an overnight polysomnography and complet...

ConclusionsData suggest that patients with insomnia and sleep apnea, compared to patients with only sleep apnea, presented higher left high-frequency rhythms during pre-sleep wakefulness and R sleep stage, and may be for increased emotional and cognitive-related activity, while in stage N1, presented higher left delta power, which suggest some slowing after sleep deprivation.

dt T Abstract Work stress and poor sleep are closely related in cross-sectional data, but evidence from prospective data is limited. We analysed how perceived stress and work stressors (work demands, decision authority and workplace social support) are related to key dimensions of insomnia over time, using structural equation modelling. Biennial measurements from a large sample of the working population in Sweden enabled us to analyse both the relationship from stress to sleep as well as that from sleep to stress. Overall, we found reciprocal relations between insomnia and all four stress measures. However, lookin...

Abstract The relevance of altered rest-activity rhythm (RAR) and light exposure rhythm (LER) in insomnia patients under natural conditions remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the parametric and nonparametric circadian variables of RAR and those of LER under natural conditions between insomnia patients and normal controls (NC) in a community-dwelling setting. The relationship of the nonparametric variables with sleep quality was also explored in both groups. Participants above 18 years old were recruited from three Public Health Centers in a rural area of Korea. Actigraphy (Actiwatch 2; Philips Re...

Abstract Background: Insomnia is a problem that is common in all societies and age groups. However, its importance is increasing between students especially with the highly competitive and demanding environment surrounding them even after their graduation. In spite of the deep understanding of its health and social consequences, the frequency of insomnia among medical students in Jordan was not determined. Aim: To determine the prevalence of sleep disturbances among college students and to look for any association between sleep disturbances and students' academic achievement. Methods: This is a cross-sec...

AbstractSleepiness propensity and sleepiness perception are two relevant dimensions of the general multidimensional sleepiness construct. In the current study, the aim was to identify eventual homogeneous subgroups when sleepiness propensity and sleepiness perception measures are combined. Data from 678 undergraduate students (aged 17 to 24  years) from a medical school were analyzed. A Two-Step Cluster Analysis was performed taken into consideration sleepiness propensity and sleepiness perception measures as clustering variables. Four different clusters were identified. Additionally, the two groups comprising higher ...
