(Drexel University) An algorithm akin to the annoyingly helpful one that attempts to auto-complete text messages and emails is now being harnessed for a better cause. A group of Drexel University researchers are using its pattern-recognition ability to identify microbial communities in the body by sifting through volumes of genetic code. Their method could speed the development of medical treatments for microbiota-linked ailments like Crohn's disease.

Wernicke`s encephalopathy is associated mainly with malnourishment in alcohol-dependent patients but can be caused also by cancer, Crohn's disease, gastrointestinal surgery or prolonged parenteral nutrition (PN) without adequate supplementation of vitamins. The disorder, with a significant mortality rate of up to 20%, is often associated with the underlying disease and intensifies after administration of non-supplemented PN. Thus, it seems justified to add thiamine to PN admixtures prepared for parenterally fed patients.

The pharmacokinetic and exposure response profiles of ustekinumab, a monoclonal antibody against interleukin 12/interleukin 23, are known in patients with Crohn ’s disease, yet there are few data from patients with ulcerative colitis. We characterized ustekinumab’s pharmacokinetics, exposure response, and optimal serum concentrations in patients with ulcerative colitis.
