An early warning system for diabetic automobile drivers with peripheral neuropathy - Esparza J, Gudimetla P, De Silva S, Unsworth CA.

Purpose: People with Type 2 diabetes exhibit peripheral neuropathy that results in the progressive loss of sensation in their feet. This may adversely affect their ability to drive as there is the potential for their foot to slip off the accelerator...

This study examines the changes that occur in corneal nerve morphology as a result of peripheral neuropathy due to renal dysfunction in people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Sixty-two participants (mean age, 62 ± 12 years) with type 2 diabetes and 25 age-matched healthy controls underwent a comprehensive assessment of neuropathy using the total neuropathy score (TNS). The corneal sub-basal nerve plexus was imaged using corneal confocal microscopy. Corneal nerve fiber length, fiber density, branch density, total branch density, nerve fractal dimension, inferior whorl length and inferior whorl nerve fractal d...

Conclusions/interpretationShort-term structured strength and balance training did not influence HRQoL but produced sustained improvements in functional status and balance confidence at 6  months. More intensive interventions may be needed to influence HRQoL in these individuals. However, this intervention may be a useful treatment option for individuals with DPN to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT02115932FundingThis work was supported by the National Medical Research Council, Singapore.

Exp Clin Endocrinol Diabetes DOI: 10.1055/a-1025-3724 Aims To determine the relationships of sudomotor functions, nerve conductions and self-reported depressive symptoms in Chinese type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. Methods T2DM patients in a single community health center were included in this study. Demographic, medical and laboratory data were collected. Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) examination was conducted in all patients. SUDOSCAN test and Point-of-care Nerve Conduction Device (DPN-check) were conducted and all the patients finished the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results A total of 162 T...

This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyl vitamin D (25 [OH] D) concentration and DPN in patients with T2DM by a meta-analysis, and to provide a reference for doctors. Methods: Relevant studies were selected from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP databases, and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform databases dating from 2000 to December 2017. A total of 75 articles related to serum 25 (OH) D and DPN were selected from 2000 to December 2017. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the literature, a quality assessment was conducted using the ...
