Reduced economic burden of AIDS-defining illnesses associated with adherence to antiretroviral therapy

Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has greatly reduced the incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and increased the life expectancy of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, approximately 770,000 people still died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2018 worldwide (UNAIDS, 2019). In Taiwan, at the end of 2018, there were 31,453 people living with HIV infection, with 2,064 newly diagnosed HIV cases and 1,116 people reported with AIDS (Taiwan CDC, 2019). AIDS-defining illnesses (ADIs) include a wide range of opportunistic infections (OIs) and cancers.
