Abstract The pathogenesis and prognosis of glioblastoma (GBM) remain poorly understood. Mutual exclusivity analysis can distinguish driver genes and pathways from passenger ones. The purpose of this study was to identify mutually exclusive gene sets (MEGSs) that have prognostic value and to detect novel driver genes in GBM. The genomic alteration profile and clinical information were derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas, and the MEGSA method was used to identify the MEGS. Next, we performed survival analysis and constructed a risk prediction model for prognostic stratification. Leave-one-out cross-validation and p...

Abstract Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) is an available tumor biomarker mainly for detecting ovarian cancer. However, it is unknown whether it can be a novel indicator for diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of serum HE4 as a novel biomarker for DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We enrolled 236 patients with T2DM and 82 healthy individuals. Serum HE4 was detected by ARCHITECT i2000 and compared between T2DM patients and healthy controls. The relationships between various variables and HE4 were analyzed by univariate or multivari...

taf M Abstract A- and D-ring-modified luotonin-inspired heterocycles have been synthesized and were evaluated for their activity against the viability of four cancer cell lines in vitro, namely, MCF7, HCT116, JURKAT, and NCI-H460. The analysis of results indicated that two of the synthesized derivatives displayed good inhibition against the growth of the human colon cancer HCT116 cell line, with potencies lower than but in the same order of magnitude as camptothecin (CPT). These two luotonin analogues also showed an activity similar to that of the highly potent alkaloid CPT as inhibitors of topoisomerase I and als...

Publication date: Available online 9 December 2019Source: Journal of Theoretical BiologyAuthor(s): Luis F. Ponce, Karina García-Martínez, Kalet LeónAbstractIL-1 system is involved in the induction and maintenance of chronic inflammation associated with several autoimmune diseases and cancer, mainly due to its capacity to promote the secretion of inflammatory mediators. For this reason, several intracellular and extracellular mechanisms for this system have been fixed during the evolution. In spite of the large description of molecular interactions between IL-1 ligands and receptors, little is known abo...

Authors: Galizia G, Auricchio A, de Vita F, Cardella F, Mabilia A, Basile N, Orditura M, Lieto E Abstract PURPOSE: Oncological outcome depends not only on tumor behaviour but also on nutritional and immune-inflammatory host status. Data in gastric cancer are limited. The main aim of this study was to prospectively assess Naples prognostic score (NPS) in gastric cancer patients. NPS was also compared with prognostic nutritional index (PNI), controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score and systemic inflammation score (SIS). METHODS: Overall survival (OS) and complication rates of 415 patients undergoing gastric c...

CONCLUSIONS: These data impose a closer follow-up of smokers and pre-neoplastic cases and the utility of the broadspectrum polymerase chain reaction assay in laryngeal dysplastic and cancer lesions. This study may allow to develop biomarkers for early detection or recurrence surveillance, to identify therapeutic targets, and to begin individualization of treatment based on the biology of these tumours. KEY WORDS: HPV infection, Larynx, Laryngeal chronic hyperplastic inflammation, Squamous cell carcinoma. PMID: 31814599 [PubMed - in process]

ConclusionsCancer Survival Index survival estimates increased among all race and sex subpopulations during 2005–2014. A substantial but decreasing survival gap persisted between blacks and whites. The Cancer Survival Index can assist decision makers and others in comparing cancer survival among populations and over time and in monitoring progress toward national cancer surveillance objectives.

Authors: Chen YF, Liang YX, Yang JA, Yuan DZ, Li J, Zheng SS, Wan YP, Wang B, Han ZD, Zhong WD Abstract Abnormal expression of Holliday junction recognition protein (HJURP) in several types of tumor cells plays a vital role in the formation and progression of tumors. Few studies have investigated the role of HJURP in prostate cancer (PCa). The aim of this study was to analyze the expression levels of HJURP in PCa and to establish the association with clinicopathological data. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical analysis were used to detect the expression levels of HJ...

Authors: Dong Y, Zhang N, Zhao S, Chen X, Li F, Tao X Abstract Globally, liver cancer has the third highest mortality rate among all types of cancer due to the invasive and metastatic capacities of liver tumor cells. MicroRNA (miR) is a class of non-coding RNAs that participate in the development of liver cancer. The aim of the present study was to explore the molecular mechanisms by which miR-221-3p and miR-15b-5p promote the proliferation and invasion of liver cancer cells through targeting axis formation inhibitor 2 (Axin2) and to identify suitable targets for the treatment of liver cancer. The expression levels...
