BOSTON (CBS) — Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but a new study published in JAMA Dermatology finds melanoma rates are actually dropping, at least in young people. Melanoma is linked to exposing skin to ultraviolet light (UV), most notably through sunburns during childhood. Researchers looked at data from almost a million cases of invasive melanoma between 2006 and 2015, and found that while the rates ticked up in adults over 40, they dropped 23% among adolescents and adults under 30. They say this suggests that public health efforts to get people to use sun protection and avoid excessive UV exposure is working.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE: Efforts that prevent adverse childhood experiences could also potentially prevent adult chronic conditions, depression, health risk behaviors, and negative socioeconomic outcomes. States can use comprehensive public health approaches derived from the best available evidence to prevent childhood adversity before it begins. Hydroa vacciniforme-like lymphoproliferative disorder (HVLPD) is a rare Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated T-cell lymphoproliferative disease. The term HVLPD has been renamed from hydroa vacciniforme-like lymphoma to lymphoproliferative disorder according to 2016 WHO classification due to its relationship with chronic active EBV infection and a spectrum in terms of its clinical course. It usually affects children and young adolescents, although adult and elderly cases have been reported. Clinically, it is characterized by recurrent erythematous papules and vesicles leaving pitted scars on the sun-exposed area including face and forearms.

Propranolol is currently the first-line treatment for severe infantile hemangioma (IH), the most frequent skin tumor in childhood. Neither the molecular mechanism of action of propranolol nor the cell type target of the drug has been identified with a strong proof of concept. We have developed an IH in vitro model using patient-derived endothelial cells, pericytes and PDGFR- α + stromal cells. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of these perivascular cells in IH vascular proliferation and in the antitumor effect of propranolol on IH angiogenesis.

CONCLUSION: The National SunSmart Schools program continues to have a substantial impact in supporting the adoption of appropriate sun protection policies and their practical implementation. SO WHAT?: Even small changes to sun protection practices in Australian primary schools can have a major positive impact on long-term health outcomes. SunSmart membership can be leveraged to broaden existing policies and practices, targeting priority areas such as shade provision and the incorporation of sun protection into school curriculum.
