ABSTRACT: High mortality rates continue among African Americans related to complications of uncontrolled hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine if a faith-based self-management education program would improve self-care activities related to the management of hypertension among African American adults. Ten African American adults who reported a diagnosis of hypertension for 6 months or longer completed an 8-week education program focused on strategies for hypertension management. The education program was enhanced with the utilization of spiritual components of prayer, Scripture reading, and journaling.

Conclusions: There is a need to develop and test interventions that improve self-management in elderly patients with hypertension. Specifically, individualized interventions to promote exercise among elderly persons with hypertension who are single and living alone are needed. Male patients with a lower education level, poor well-being, poor family function, and the lowest self-management levels are a key population to target.

Abstract We studied dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis, an indicator of oxidative stress, to investigate the effects of newly initiated exercise training on sedentary obese adults. Seventeen sedentary obese adults and 15 normal-weight controls were included in the sample for this study. The obese adults were given a physical exercise training program that lasted twelve weeks. Before and after the exercise training program, blood samples were collected, and serum thiol/disulphide parameters were measured by using a novel technique. Before the start of the exercise training, it was observed that thiol/disulphide h...

Conclusions: In this exploratory study, obesity in general was associated with dysbiotic intestinal microbiota. The relationships of VAT to bacterial diversity and sCD14 suggest that dysbiosis in viscerally obese PLWH could be associated with heightened inflammatory state.

Background and Aims: Gender disparities exist in outcomes among patients with cirrhosis. We sought to evaluate the role of gender on hospital course and in-hospital outcomes in patients with cirrhosis to help better understand these disparities. Study: We analyzed data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), years 2009 to 2013, to identify patients with any diagnosis of cirrhosis. We calculated demographic and clinical characteristics by gender, as well as cirrhosis complications. Our primary outcome was inpatient mortality. We used logistic regression to associate baseline characteristics and cirrhosis complication...
