Twenty-one years ago, we thought we had syphilis licked. I recall when the requirement for a test for syphilis to apply for a marriage license was suspended in many districts. Public health experts recommended against routinely screening for syphilis because the incidence had fallen so low. By 1998, syphilis, for centuries incurable and prolific, seemed on the verge of extinction. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tried to seize the moment, launching the Syphilis Elimination Effort (SEE).
