Short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides alleviates oxidized oil-induced intestinal dysfunction in piglets associated with the modulation of gut microbiota

In this study, the protective effects of short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scFOS) on oxidized oil feeding-induced intestinal dysfunction were evaluated. Piglets were fed either a control diet, an oxidized oil diet, or an oxidized oil diet supplemented with scFOS (4 g/kg diet) for 28 days. The results showed that scFOS increased the expression of tight junction proteins and decreased the production of malondialdehyde and pro-inflammatory cytokines in jejunum of oxidized oil-challenged piglets. In addition, scFOS mitigated oxidized oil-dependent changes in the relative abundances of Prevotella_9, Bacteroides, Campylobacter, and Lactobacillus back to normal status as well as restored the colonic butyric acid production of oxidized oil-treated piglets. Hence, scFOS consumption alleviated oxidized oil-induced intestinal barrier injury, redox imbalance, and inflammation associated with the alterations of microbiota composition, suggesting that scFOS could be used to prevent intestinal dysfunction caused by oxidized oil in both human and animal nutrition.Graphical abstract
