Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic pain condition that is one of the leading causes of physical impairment and disability across the world.40 The prevalence of KOA is expected to continuously escalate due to population aging and increases in obesity rates.63 Women are particularly at-risk for developing chronic pain and KOA.20,43 Further, women generally report higher pain-related symptoms (including KOA symptoms57), evoked-pain sensitivity, and lower pain tolerance compared to men.20,43

This study sought to investigate what could be learned from how these men have fared. The men were born in 1925-1928 and similar health-related data from questionnaires, physical examination, and blood samples are available for all surveys. CONCLUSION: This review demonstrates that nutrition can improve the symptoms of OA. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate have shown robustly to delay the progression of knee OA in several well-designed studies, however more controlled clinical trials are needed to conclude that nutritional changes slow down the progression of the disease. ConclusionsThe outcome of TKA in non-morbidly obese patients is comparable to non-obese patients with excellent post-operative objective and functional scores.
