Higher Education R & D Funding from All Sources Increased for the Third Straight Year in FY 2018

Funding of higher education research and development increased across all funding sources in FY 2018, marking the third straight year of steady growth. Total R&D expenditures increased $ 4.1 billion ( 5.5 % ) from FY 2017, reaching $ 79.4 billion. Federal funding of R&D has increased in both current and constant dollars for three straight years, according to data from the Higher Education Research and Development ( HERD ) Survey by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.
