Authors: Silverstein NM, Pitheckoff N, Dugan E Abstract Engaging gerontology students in research that hits "close-to-home" can have lasting benefits for them and their communities both professionally and personally. Since 2016, cohorts of undergraduate/certificate students in an online applied research in aging course have explored healthy aging in their Massachusetts' (MA) communities. The students utilized both primary and secondary data sources. First, they extracted data from the 2014-2015 healthy aging data report (HADR) community profiles of 367 MA communities. Then they conducted in-person in...

SGLT-2 inhibitors and most GLP-1 receptor agonists demonstrated cardiovascular superiority and reduction of cardiovascular and overall mortality. These results stand as a turning point in the management of diabetes, shifting the focus from controlling glucose levels to mastering the extra-glycemic effects of these new drugs. This narrative review will discuss recent CVOT with focus on SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists to distinguish relevant patients' characteristics as potential predictors for therapeutic efficacy.

Authors: Das AK, Kalra S, Tiwaskar M, Bajaj S, Seshadri K, Chowdhury S, Sahay R, Indurkar S, Unnikrishnan AG, Phadke U, Pareek A, Purkait I Abstract Diabetes is a major public health emergency of the 21st century. Results of the Indian Council of Medical Research-INdia DIABetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study have found prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in India to be as high as 7.3% and 10.3%, respectively with nation-wide projection of 77.2 million people with prediabetes and 69.2 million with diabetes. It is well established that insulin resistance (IR) and islet β-cell failure are the two major features of T2D Mu...

ConclusionThis prospective clinical trial will prove if withholding ACEIs/ARBs will prevent AKI in ADHF. It will help us understand the complex interactions between the heart and kidney, and delineate the best treatment strategy for ADHF. Holding ACEIs/ARBs might help preserve renal function, and decrease hospital LOS, readmission rates, and cost of care in identifier: NCT03695120.

Vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D) is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure (HF) [1]. Vitamin D might play a role in the pathogenesis of HF [1 –4], with mechanisms for this possibly including effects on the renin–angiotensin system, insulin secretion and sensitivity, protection against angiogenesis and reduction of the pro-inflammatory response in HF [5–7]. However, a recent vitamin D supplementation trial did not find a beneficial e ffect on parameters of renin-angiotensin system in patient with advance HF [8].

CONCLUSION: 'AVNRT of the sick' has not been previously described in the medical literature, to our knowledge. It can be successfully treated with medications and the chance of recurrence after resolution of the acute illness is small. PMID: 31802764 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSION: Current evidence implicates a possible association between PEI and malnutrition in patients with CHF. Chronic pancreatic tissue hypoxic injury driven by prolonged splanchnic hypoperfusion is likely to contribute to malnutrition and cachexia in patients with CHF. On the other hand, CP and PEI seem to be an independent risk factor associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. PMID: 31802835 [PubMed - in process]

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThiazolidinediones (TZDs) are the only pharmacologic agents that specifically treat insulin resistance. The beneficial effects of TZDs on the cardiovascular risk factors associated with insulin resistance have been well documented. TZD use has been limited because of concern about safety issues and side effects.Recent FindingsRecent studies indicate that cardiovascular toxicity with rosiglitazone and increase in bladder cancer with pioglitazone are no longer significant issues. There are new data which show that pioglitazone treatment reduces myocardial infarctions and ischemic strokes. New data co...
