Multisystem Imaging of the Critically Ill Patient

Hospitalized patients present a unique challenge to radiologists. In the era of ever-increasing subspecialization, it is important to take a step back and recognize that the critically ill patient often has disease that affects multiple organ systems, or multiple concurrent disorders that prompt imaging. In addition to systemic conditions with multiple findings, surgical changes, support devices, medications, and their side effects may all cause imaging findings in the hospitalized patient. The effects of these conditions may be readily apparent, but providing a precise diagnosis requires awareness from the interpreting radiologist.
