Pancytopenia due to massive bone marrow carcinomatosis after radiotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer

AbstractPancytopenia is a rare complication among patients with breast cancer. Here, we report a case of pancytopenia due to massive bone marrow carcinomatosis (BMC) developed after local radiotherapy following to mastectomy. A 48-year-old woman with locally advanced breast cancer underwent mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. During adjuvant chemotherapy, rapidly growing supraclavicular lymph node metastasis was noted, so chemotherapy was discontinued and local radiotherapy was performed. There was no myelosuppression or systemic metastases prior to radiotherapy, but 2 weeks after the completion of radiotherapy, complete blood counts showed pancytopenia, and chest CT scans revealed multiple bone metastasis. A bone marrow biopsy was performed and massive BMC was diagnosed. Despite the best supportive care, her disease progressed rapidly and she died 2  months after radiotherapy. Locally advanced breast cancer that is resistant to chemotherapy is at risk of early fatal BMC and should be carefully monitored.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential mechanism of PRSS3 dysregulation in PC. In this research, low miR-217 and high circ-ADAM9 expression were found in PC tissues and cell lines, which was closely associated with advanced clinical stage and lymph node metastasis. Patients with low miR-217 or high circ-ADAM9 expression had shorter survival time than those with high miR-217 or low circ-ADAM9 expression. Functionally, manipulation of miR-217 and circ-ADAM9 expression showed opposite effects on cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Stepwise mechanism studies indicated that circ-ADAM9 alleviated the inhibi...

BOSTON (CBS) — According to a new study published in the journal Cancer, even light to moderate alcohol intake has been linked to a higher risk of cancer. Researchers at the University of Tokyo and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health looked at data on over 60,000 cancer patients in Japan. They found drinking as little as one drink a day for 10 years or two drinks a year for five years, was associated would increase overall cancer risk by five percent, such as cancers of the colon, stomach, breast, prostate, and esophagus. Cancer risk was lowest with no alcohol consumption.

Cancer immunology drugs, which harness the body ’s immune system to better attack cancer cells, have significantly changed the face of cancer treatment. People with aggressive cancers are now living longer, healthier lives. Unfortunately, cancer immunology therapy only works in a subset of patients. Now, a new study from scientists at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center helps explain why some people with advanced cancer may not respond to one of the leading immunotherapies, PD-1 blockade, and how a new combination approach may help overcome resistance to the immunotherapy drug.TheUCLA study, published today i...

ConclusionThe new compound (1) exhibited good anti-cancer activity, which suggests that a great effort has to be paid to investigate the bioactivity of sulfonated compounds. The fractions of CR-SR decoction exhibited stronger anti-tumor activities than that of CR and SR against 5 different cancer cells. As for chemical composition, it is the first time to report that diarylheptanoids are in Sparganiaceae and the sulfonated compounds in Zingiberaceae. Moreover, the linear-diarylheptanoids found in SR which being tested to possess good anti-tumor activity, plus those compounds in CR enhance the capacity of CR-SR. It shows im...
