This article provides information on these and other travel vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and cholera.Yellow fever endemic areas are located in Africa and in South America; there is no yellow fever in Asia. The meningococcal vaccine (A, C, W, Y) is required for pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. Additionally, it is recommended for travellers visiting the African "meningitis belt" during the dry season. A polio booster is required for countries with endemic wild-type polio virus (WPV) or circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV).Hepatitis A is a common vaccine-prev...

I have been seeing a lot of second disease and fifth disease—it's that time of year. School is back in session, and winter is just around the corner. The rash-numbering system for these diseases is now a historical footnote, but fifth disease is still commonly used by physicians to refer to erythema infectiosum, a parvovirus. I suspect that this system was created as a memory device for similar names and the obscure Latin terms used for these diseases. Erythema infectiosum is also easy to confuse with the many other erythema rashes such as erythema migrans, erythema marginatum, erythema toxicum, and erythema multif...

CONCLUSIONS: Given the current incidence of invasive meningococcal disease in Spain and the information available from 4CMenB, our model shows that routine vaccination is not cost-effective at the current price. Only with a vaccine price of 1.45 € for the 3+1 schedule or 3.37 € for the 2+1 schedule could it be recommended based on efficiency criteria. PMID: 31776044 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

We recently published a case series of typically commensal Neisseria spp. disease among eculizumab recipients.1 Eculizumab is a terminal complement inhibitor indicated for treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, and certain patients with generalized myasthenia gravis or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.2 Due to complement inhibition, many different Neisseria spp. can cause invasive disease in eculizumab recipients1, 3, 4 and eculizumab recipients are at an estimated 2000-fold increased risk of meningococcal disease (caused by Neisseria meningitidis).

The objective of this study was to determine the number of cases of pediatric meningitis or purpura fulminans associated with an incorrect vaccination status from 2011 to 2013 in France. A total of 48 children with vaccine-preventable meningitis or purpura fulminans, including three deaths, had an incorrect vaccination status: 26 cases were due to Neisseria meningitidis group C (54.2%), 19 to Streptococcus pneumoniae (39.6%), and three to Haemophilus influenzae type b (6.3%). The majority of patients (n=35, 72.9%) had received no injection of the vaccine concerned. Over a 3-year period, 48 cases of bacterial meningiti...
