A Field Study Into Hong Kong ’s Wet Markets: Raised Questions Into the Hygienic Maintenance of Meat Contact Surfaces and the Dissemination of Microorganisms Associated With Nosocomial Infections

This study should, therefore, serve as a basis to review current hygienic practices in Hong Kong’s wet market on a larger scale, thereby improving food safety and ultimately, public health.

Waddad, Chunderika Mocktar, Charlotte Ramdhin, Thirumala GovenderAbstractThe global threat of antimicrobial resistant strains calls for innovative strategies to utilize nano drug delivery systems to enhance the delivery of antibiotics, thus reducing the development of resistance. Supramolecular amphiphiles that can self-assemble into nanostructures are one such nano delivery system, that are showing potential for effective drug delivery. The aim...

The objective of this study was to estimate AMU in a broiler chicken farm in Pakistan over a five-year period and to extrapolate national AMU in commercial broiler farming. Between 2013 and 2017, we monitored AMU in 30 flocks from a commercial broiler farm in Punjab, the most populous province of Pakistan. The amount of antimicrobials administered was calculated in milligram/population unit of the final flock weight (mg/fPU) and in used daily dose (UDD). The annual on-farm antimicrobial use was 250.84 mg of active ingredient per kilogram of the final flock weight. This consumption intensity exceeds the amount of antimicrob...

This study used new genetic and molecular tools to inhibit pathogenicity and infection by E. faecalis. In this study, we suggested that efaA gene plays a critical role in the biofilm formation and anti-efaA PNAs could decrease the formation of biofilm, as well as, anti-ftsZ PNAs could eliminate bacterial growth.

DiscussionAntibiotic resistance in environmental samples around wastewater treatment plants may pose a risk of exposure to workers and nearby residents. Results from the systematic review outlined in this protocol will allow to estimate the extend of exposure, to inform policy making and help to design future studies.

AbstractThe initial clinical status after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is an important outcome predictor, but the mechanisms behind the early brain injury (EBI) remains incompletely understood. Elevated neurofilament levels in the cerebrospinal fluid at protracted stages after SAH are associated with poor outcome, but the potential association between plasma neurofilament (pNfL) levels during EBI, disease severity on admission, and poor outcome remains unaddressed. Plasma NfL (pNfL) was measured by single molecule array in 44 SAH patients on admission and 24  h after ictus, as well as in 44 controls. Disease severity...
