Influence of single-sided deafness on the auditory capacity of the better ear.
CONCLUSION: The origin of the poorer hearing of the better-hearing ear of SSD patients compared to an age-correlated NH cohort is still unclear. It is most likely a combination of different anatomical, immunological, etiological, and microcirculatory causes, which lead to poorer hearing of the better-hearing ear in SSD patients. AbstractThe linguistic input children receive has a massive and immediate effect on their language acquisition. This fact makes it difficult to discover the biases that children bring to language learning simply because their input is likely to obscure those biases. In this article, I turn to children who lack linguistic input to aid in this discovery: deaf children whose hearing losses prevent their acquisition of spoken language and whose hearing parents have not yet exposed them to sign language. These children lack input from a conventional language model, yet create gestures, calledhomesigns, to communicate with heari...
CONCLUSION: Our study expands the mutation spectrum of WSF1 mutations with three novel mutations. Homozygosity mapping may provide enrichment for molecular genetic analysis and early diagnosis of WS1 patients with incomplete phenotype, particularly in consanguineous pedigrees. Conclusion: In this retrospective review it could be shown that simple case history information can only provide limited prognostic insight before CI. The duration of deafness is the most reliable anamnestic factor present on initial patient evaluation.ORL
[Kubatana.net] WALPE in partnership with Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DZT) and Mutasa Youth Forum (MYF) with the support from Christian Aid were on the 7th to the 10th of September 2020 in Mutasa District in Manicaland province for the Citizen Social Accountability Engagement Forums that were held in wards 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 26, 28 and 31. CONCLUSION: The Bonebridge device provides the benefit of improved speech perception performance in patients with single-sided deafness. Sound localisation abilities were neither improved nor worsened with Bonebridge implantation at the follow-up assessments. PMID: 32933596 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Facial coverings are helping us to limit the spread of COVID-19, but for people who rely on lip reading, communication just got harder. Consultant pharmacist Karen Miller, whose daughter is deaf, says we could all rethink how we interact with our patients and each other.
The objectives of this study were to investigate and evaluate the body composition, the physical working capacity, the nutrition intake, and the blood parameters of iron and vitamin D in the Lithuanian high-performance deaf women’s basketball team players. The female athletes (n = 14) of the Lithuanian deaf basketball team aged 26.4 ± 4.5 years were recruited for an observational cross-sectional study. A 7-day food recall survey method was used to investigate their actual diet. The measurements of the body composition were performed using the BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) tetra-polar electrode...
Discussion: The results confirmed the clinical safety, performance, and benefit of this new treatment modality for subjects with CHL, MHL, and SSD.
