An unusual case of familial systemic lupus erythematosus with distal renal tubular acidosis and hemolytic anemia.

We report an adolescent girl with SLE, autoimmune thyroiditis and distal RTA who subsequently developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia. During a follow up of almost 7 years the girl never developed any proteinuria while the RTA persisted. Also during this period her mother was also diagnosed with SLE manifesting as thrombocytopenia. One of the predisposing factors at molecular level for this cancer is via WNT signaling which is associated with the vast numbers of different genes. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate whether Adenomatous Polyposis ...

CONCLUSIONS: PD-L1 inhibitors lead to immune mediated thyroiditis, the most frequent endocrine IRAE. In most cases, management is supportive without requiring steroids or discontinuation of immunotherapy. Diffusely increased thyroid 18FDG uptake on PET scan may predict the occurrence of thyroiditis, whereas TPO antibodies may help identify its severity. Thyroiditis may be a biomarker for anti-tumor immune response, highlighting the need to further characterize its underlying mechanism. PMID: 31813343 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

This study assessed whether all BMS patients with ID (so-called ID/BMS patients) had iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and evaluated whether the ID/BMS patients had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than healthy control subjects.Materials and methodsThe blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 143 ID/BMS patients and 442 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.ResultsWe found that 143 ID/BMS patients had significantly lower mean blood Hb and serum i...

Originally published in the Cornell ChronicleFolate is an essential B-vitamin that is needed for DNA synthesis and cell division. Folate deficiency can lead to anemia, and deficiency early in pregnancy can lead to neural tube defects – birth defects of the brain, spine and spinal cord, including spina bifida.A Cochrane systematic review on the benefits and safety of fortifying wheat or maize flour with folic acid and population health outcomes, led by scientists in the  Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell, found that fortification with folic acid (the synthetic form of folate) may improve folate sta...

Authors: Ye X, Zhou XJ, Zhang H Abstract Autophagy is an important biology process, central to the maintenance of biology process in both physiological and pathological situations. It is regarded as a "double-edged sword"-exerting both protective and/or detrimental effects. These two-way effects are observed in immune cells as well as renal resident cells, including podocytes, mesangial cells, tubular epithelial cells, and endothelial cells of the glomerular capillaries. Mounting evidence suggests that autophagy is implicated in the pathological process of various immune-related renal diseases (IRRDs) as ...

Authors: Sun L, Liu W, Zhang LJ Abstract As the key defense molecules originally identified in Drosophila, Toll-like receptor (TLR) superfamily members play a fundamental role in detecting invading pathogens or damage and initiating the innate immune system of mammalian cells. The skin, the largest organ of the human body, protects the human body by providing a critical physical and immunological active multilayered barrier against invading pathogens and environmental factors. At the first line of defense, the skin is constantly exposed to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecul...

Christopher A. PrebleThere ’s much to hate in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY2020, which passed out of conference committee late yesterday evening (storyhere, summary in .pdf here). I suspect my colleagues will unpack or attack some of the details, but I ’m generally annoyed by the top line – $738 billion – at a time whenthe annual federal budget deficit surpasses $1 trillion. The utter failure of elected officials in both parties to come to grips with our fiscal catastrophe, and align our overly ambitious strategy with our obvious resource constraints is frustrating in the extre...
