Metabolic syndrome is a predictor of decreased renal function among community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly Japanese

We examined the relationship between baseline MetS and renal dysfunction after a 3-year evaluation based on estimated glomerul ar filtration rate (eGFRCKDEPI) using the CKD-EPI equations modified by the Japan coefficient. CKD was defined as dipstick-positive proteinuria (>  or = 1 +) or a low eGFRCKDEPI (

Conclusions: Thirst in patients with HF was related to a higher dose of loop diuretics and fluid restriction. Healthcare providers should realize that it is important to assess thirst regularly and reconsider the need of a fluid restriction and the amount of loop diuretics in case of thirst.

Abstract We studied dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis, an indicator of oxidative stress, to investigate the effects of newly initiated exercise training on sedentary obese adults. Seventeen sedentary obese adults and 15 normal-weight controls were included in the sample for this study. The obese adults were given a physical exercise training program that lasted twelve weeks. Before and after the exercise training program, blood samples were collected, and serum thiol/disulphide parameters were measured by using a novel technique. Before the start of the exercise training, it was observed that thiol/disulphide h...

Conclusions: In this exploratory study, obesity in general was associated with dysbiotic intestinal microbiota. The relationships of VAT to bacterial diversity and sCD14 suggest that dysbiosis in viscerally obese PLWH could be associated with heightened inflammatory state.

Discussion–conclusionThe findings of this study suggest that caution should be taken when prescribing Statins in older adults, as this could decrease ML stability and ultimately increase fall risk.

This study aimed to assess the association between prevalence of excess weight and obesity and overall and disease-specific mortality rates in Brazilian state capitals and Argentine provinces. This was an ecological study with secondary data, where the principal exposures were prevalence rates for excess weight and obesity, estimated with data from Brazil's Vigitel survey (Risk and Protective Factors Surveillance System for Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases Through Telephone Interveiew) in 2014 and Argentina's National Risk Factor Survey in 2013. Overall and specific mortality rates for the year 2015 were obtained from the...

MortonAbstractApolipoprotein F (ApoF) regulates cholesteryl ester transfer protein activity. We previously observed that hepatic APOF mRNA levels are decreased by high fat, cholesterol-enriched diets. Here we show in human liver C3A cells that APOF mRNA levels are reduced by agonists of LXR and PPARα nuclear receptors. This negative regulation requires co-incubation with the RXR agonist, retinoic acid. Bioinformatic analysis of the ~2 kb s...

In conclusion, silybin was shown to have molecular effects on signaling pathways that were previously unknown and potentially protect the hepatocyte. These actions intersect TG metabolism, fat-induced autophagy and AQP9-mediated glycerol transport in hepatocytes.Graphical abstract

The objective of our study was to evaluate if the replacement of LCT by MCT in high-fat diets could prevent and/or reduce metabolic disorders. For this purpose, two cohorts of C57BL/6 mice were fed during 10 weeks with three isocaloric high-fat diets with variable MCT content. Cohort A was composed of lean mice while cohort B was composed of obese, insulin resistant mice. In cohort A, replacement of LCT by MCT preserved metabolic health, in part by triggering hepatic thermogenesis. We further found that medium chain fatty acids promote thermogenesis markers within cultured hepatocytes in a FFAR1/GPR40-dependent manner. I...
