Identification of genetic risk factors associated with ischaemic stroke in young Mexican patients

ConclusionThe polymorphisms Glu298Asp and C677T, affecting the eNOS and 5,10-MTHFR enzymes, respectively, and smoking, hypertension, and family history of stroke were associated with ischaemic stroke in young Mexican patients; this was not the case for the Thr325Ile, Ala147Thr, 4 G/5 G, and PLA1/A2 polymorphisms of the genes coding for fibrinolytic proteins and platelet receptors.

Moreover, studies in young patients are still scarce. The aim was to examin...

Written by Meyers, edits by SmithA 50-ish year old man was working construction when he suddenly collapsed. Coworkers started CPR within 1 minute of collapse. EMS arrived within 10 minutes and continued CPR and ACLS, noting alternating asystole and sinus bradycardia during rhythm checks. He received various ACLS medications and arrived at the ED with a perfusing rhythm.Initial vitals included heart rate around 100 bpm and BP 174/96. Here is his initial ECG, very soon after ROSC:What do you think?Sinus tachycardia.  There is incomplete RBBB (QRS duration less than 120 ms).  There is diffuse STD, maximal in V4-V5 a...

Abstract The gut microbiome has been implicated in the progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, heart failure, and ischemic stroke. Metabolomics studies in humans and diverse mouse populations have revealed associations between diet-derived gut bacterial metabolites, including trimethylamine-N-oxide, short-chain fatty acids, and intermediates of aromatic amino acid breakdown, with progression of CVD. Functional studies in animals fed diets of defined composition have been instrumental for establishing causal links between these metabolites, the...

ConclusionsIn a population of patients with cancer not exposed to TKIs, cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes are very common, regardless of cancer type. These data can inform the evaluation of potential excess cardiovascular risks from new interventions.

AbstractEfficacy and safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to intracranial artery dissection (IAD) are currently not established. We aimed to present a single-center experience on IAD-related AIS treated by IVT. We selected all consecutive patients with IAD-related AIS treated by IVT from a prospectively constructed single-center acute stroke registry from 2003 to 2017. We reviewed demographical, clinical and neuroimaging data and recorded hemorrhagic complications, mortality within 7  days and modified Rankin Scale at 3-months. Out of 181 AISs related to cervicocephalic dissectio...

In conclusion, older adults exhibited decreased markers of UPR activation and reduced coordination with autophagy and SC-associated gene transcripts following a single bout of unaccustomed resistance exercise. In contrast, young adults demonstrated strong coordination between UPR genes and key regulatory gene transcripts associated with autophagy and SC differentiation in skeletal muscle post-exercise. Taken together, the present findings suggest a potential age-related impairment in the post-exercise transcriptional response that supports activation of the UPR and coordination with other exercise responsive pathways (i.e....

CONCLUSION: CyPA platelet surface expression is associated with mortality whereas CyPA PPIA rs6850 is associated with recurrent MI in patients with symptomatic CAD. CyPA might offer a new biomarker for risk stratification and tailoring therapies in patients with cardiovascular disease. PMID: 31519036 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Introduction: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the highest stroke prevalence along with a case fatality that amounts to 40%. We aimed to assess the effect of a minimal setting stroke unit in SSA Public hospital on stroke mortality and main medical complications. Materials and Methods: The study was set in Conakry, Guinea, Ignace Deen public referral hospital. Clinical characteristics, hospital mortality and main medical stroke complications rates (pneumonia, urinary tract infections, sores and venous thromboembolism) of admitted stroke patients after the installation of a minimal stroke unit equipped with heart rate, bloo...

CONCLUSIONS: ACTB rs852426 was significantly associated with alcohol consumption on stroke risk, and the expression of ACTB mRNA in IS who had a drinking habit was significantly down-regulated. This finding will provide a novel insight into the prevention of stroke. PMID: 31327802 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
