A case report of long treatment with Itraconazole in a patient with chronic Chagas disease

Current available treatments (benznidazole and nifurtimox) for Chagas disease (CD) show limited efficacy in chronic phase and frequent undesirable effects. Ergosterol synthesis inhibitors (ESI) had been consid...

Carmen ThomasAbstractOne of the greatest challenges in Chagas disease research is the search for tools that will enable the assessment of pharmacological treatment efficacy. A recently described set of serological biomarkers composed of four parasite antigens and established criteria of treatment efficacy allowed the evaluation of the impact of benznidazole treatment a short/medium time ...

epickère S Abstract Chagas disease is still a major public health problem in Bolivia mostly due to the recurrent reinfestation of houses by Triatoma infestans. The current study evaluated the danger of reinfesting bugs by determining their infection rate, the genetic group (discrete typing unit, DTU) of Trypanosoma cruzi that infect them, and the possible association of recurrent infestation with environmental variables. In the municipality of Saipina, 254 km from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 57 dwellings with reinfestation background and the latest fumigation 1 or 2 months before were actively searched for tri...

Publication date: Available online 3 December 2019Source: Journal of Molecular Graphics and ModellingAuthor(s): Edward A. Valera-Vera, Melisa Sayé, Chantal Reigada, Mariana R. Miranda, Claudio A. PereiraAbstractEnolase is a glycolytic enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion between 2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate. In trypanosomatids, enolase was proposed as a key enzyme after in silico and in vivo analysis and it was validated as a protein essential for the survival of the parasite. Therefore, enolase constitutes an interesting enzyme target for the identification of drugs against Chagas disease. In thi...

Abstract Benznidazole (BZN) represents the only drug currently available for the treatment of Chagas disease in most endemic countries. When administered orally, high doses are required due to its extensive hepatic metabolism and its toxicity represents the main reason for treatment withdrawals. Because of these complications, transbuccal administration of BZN was investigated. This route avoids the first-pass hepatic metabolism and presents high permeability, with direct access to the systemic circulation. BZN was applied on porcine buccal mucosa after pretreatment with pure eugenol, carvacrol or limonene. Therma...

CONCLUSION: HCV infection was more common in older patients who may have received RBCs before testing was performed on donations, suggesting possible historic transfusion transmission. The cohort showed decreasing rates of infections and a reduction in transfusion transmission markers in younger patients compared to historical literature except for syphilis, indicating contemporary reduced risk of TTI.
