M202 treatment of cough/cold symptoms with second generation antihistamine, levocetirizine with increased safety and rapid response
Most cough/cold preparations contain sympathomimetic decongestants; many contain sedating antihistamines. Adverse effects, including death in children under 2, primarily from decongestants, but also from sedating antihistamines and dextromethorphan prompted FDA to recommend OTC cough and cold products not be used in this group. This, combined with manufacturer withdrawal under age 4, has created a cough and cold market void for young children in the US. Also, decongestant adverse effects in adults, including increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and chest tightness resulted in contraindication in heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, thyroid disease, urinary retention, asthma, and diabetes.

Authors: Ventura CG, Roque FL, Sousa IQ, Lobo RD, Luders C Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients are considered to be at high risk for infection. Here, we describe the clinical outcomes of chronic HD patients with influenza A (H1N1) infection and the strategies adopted to control an outbreak of influenza A in a dialysis unit. METHODS: Among a total of 62 chronic HD patients, H1N1 infection was identified in 12 (19.4%). Of the 32 staff members, four (12.5%) were found to be infected with the H1N1 virus. Outcomes included symptoms at presentation, comorbidities, occurrence of hypoxemia, hospit...

In this report, we describe two patients with anticentriole antibodies-positive SSc-PAH who were treated with pulmonary vasodilators. Both cases were elderly women with poor physical conditions and clinical findings of SSc. Case 1 was resistant to combination therapy with pulmonary vasodilators; in Case 2, hemodynamic improvement was obtained by upfront combination therapy at an early stage. Because anticentriole antibodies-positive SSc-PAH rapidly deteriorates, careful hemodynamic observation and timely aggressive use of pulmonary vasodilators should be considered. Authors: Sugimoto K, Yoshihisa A, Nakazato K, Yokokawa T, Misaka T, Oikawa M, Kobayashi A, Yamaki T, Kunii H, Ishida T, Takeishi Y Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by left-sided heart disease (LHD-PH) is classified into 2 types: isolated post-capillary PH (Ipc-PH) and combined pre- and post-capillary PH (Cpc-PH). However, the impact of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) or diastolic pressure gradient (DPG) on the prognosis of LHD-PH has varied among previous studies. Thus, we verified the significance of PVR or DPG on the prognosis of LHD-PH in our series. We analyzed 243 consecutive LHD-PH patients. The...
