Effects of changes in adult erythropoietin dosing guidelines on erythropoietin dosing practices, anemia, and blood transfusion in children on hemodialysis: findings from North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies (NAPRTCS)

ConclusionsDuring and following implementation of adult epo dosing guidelines, transfusion and anemia frequency increased in pediatric HD patients. Ideal target hemoglobin levels for pediatric dialysis patients warrant further study.

Discussion Gaucher disease (GD) was first described by Philippe Gaucher in 1882. It was the first lysosomal storage disease (LSD) described and is the comparison prototype for many variations and their treatment. There are about 50 LSD and more well-known ones include Fabry, Niemann-Pick and Pompe diseases. LSDs currently have more than 300 different enzymes or membrane proteins affected which cause central nervous system and visceral disease. Overall the frequency of LSDs in aggregate is 1:3000 – 7000 live births. GD has an estimated prevalence of 1:57,000 – 111,000. It is higher within the Ashkenazi Jewish po...

Authors: Oprea MM, Ivanescu AM, Colita A, Coles E, Momanu RC, Berbec N, Lupu AR Abstract Biological complexity of mechanisms of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AHAI) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia B (CLL) and the relation cause / effect between these two diseases has been extensively researched, but currently is still far from being completely understood. It is known that the immune system has an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases but also in the chronic lymphoproliferative malignancies. In this process of autoimmunity associated with immunodeficiency, the CLL neoplastic cells, the non-malignan...

We present the case of a 61-year-old male patient, diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2007, who developed myelodysplastic features three years later and then acute myeloid leukemia. At diagnosis, the blood tests showed leucocytosis, with lymphocytosis in the peripheral blood and bone marrow. Due to the negative prognostic factors, the patient received treatment with an alkylating agent (FC protocol) and then with alemtuzumab. Three years after being diagnosed with CLL, the patient presented with malaise, recent faintness and fever, with severe anemia and thrombocytopenia. The results from the bone marrow aspira...

ConclusionThis case represents a critical vascular injury from an unexpected mechanism. Inferior glenohumeral dislocations, regardless of injury mechanism, should raise the index of suspicion for vascular involvement. Endovascular repair in our patient was life-saving given her advanced age, acute blood loss anemia, rarity and severity of her injuries and multiple medical comorbidities.

In conclusion, fetal pleural effusion has a close correlation with chromosomal abnormality. CMA may increase the detection rate of chromosomal aberrations, especially for micro-deletion or micro-duplication syndromes. In the South of China, Thalassemia must be considered when a fetal pleural effusion is detected.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? The aetiology of fetal pleural effusion includes a chromosomal abnormality, a congenital heart disease, congenital infections and a number of genetic syndromes. What do the results of this study add? This is the first retrospective study to analyse the aetiology...

Authors: Suzuki-Inoue K Abstract Patients with cancer have an increased risk of thromboembolism, which is the second leading cause of death in these patients. Several mechanisms of the prothrombotic state in these patients have been proposed. Among them are a platelet activation receptor, C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2), and its endogenous ligand podoplanin, which are the focus of this review. CLEC-2 is almost specifically expressed in platelets/megakaryocytes in humans. A membrane protein, podoplanin is expressed in certain types of cancer cells, including squamous cell carcinoma, brain tumor, and osteosarc...

Authors: Lin Y Abstract Preoperative anemia is associated with increased postoperative morbidity and mortality and with increased risk of perioperative transfusion. It is an important and modifiable risk factor for surgical patients. For high-blood-loss surgery, preoperative anemia is defined as hemoglobin
