(Washington State University) A discovery by a Washington State University-led research team has the potential to inhibit the spread of West Nile virus as well as Zika and dengue viruses. The researchers demonstrated that mammalian insulin activated an antiviral immunity pathway in mosquitoes, increasing the insects' ability to suppress the viruses. Since mosquito bites are the most common way humans are infected with West Nile, stopping the virus among the insects would protect human health.

(Goethe University Frankfurt) The spread of infectious diseases such as Zika depends on many different factors. Researchers from Goethe University and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research in Frankfurt were able to generate reliable maps for the transmission risk of the Zika virus in South America.

We report the first case of a corneal ocular ectasia in an infant with Zika virus congenital infection (CZS). We suspect that the ocular embryology and neurotropism of the Zika virus could account for the corneal involvement.

In conclusion, the author of this paper mentioned that immunization gap needs to be handle systematically. Immunization data released on 2017 showed that complete immunization was given only to 20% of targeted group, while almost 75% were either unvaccinated or unknown. During the outbreak of diphteria in Indonesia, the WHO also reported several countries with similar problem such as Bangladesh, Haiti and Yamen. It was shown that a coordination between doctors in clinic/hospital with public health officer to conduct an epidemiological investigation, in conjunction with giving prophylaxis and assuring the logistics of anti-...

Conclusion: PCR evidence of infection with herpes group viruses was found in one-third of patients with hypertensive anterior uveitis; CMV being the most common pathogen. The PCR-positive group generally responded well to a combination of antiviral and anti-glaucoma treatment. PMID: 31697590 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Rampazzo R Abstract Arboviruses have been emerging and reemerging worldwide, predominantly in tropical and subtropical areas. As many arbovirus infections, including dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and chikungunya (CHIKV), have similar signs and symptoms, clinical diagnosis of arbovirus infections is challenging. Therefore, reliable laboratory tests are necessary to improve the clinical management of patients with suspected arbovirus infections. Real-time reverse-transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) is among the more effective methods to distinguish these viruses. The aim of this study was to construct a unique positive exter...

CONCLUSION Epilepsy, irritability, dysphagia, and musculoskeletal comorbidities were the most frequent clinical variables in children with microcephaly. There was a high prevalence of congenital ZIKV microcephaly syndrome in this sample.RESUMO OBJETIVO Pretende-se, neste estudo, identificar a preval ência de variáveis clínicas em crianças com microcefalia. MÉTODOS Trata-se de um estudo transversal e observacional com dados coletados de prontuários de pacientes admitidos no ambulatório de microcefalia de um centro de referência em Teresina (PI). Foram coletados dados dem...

Rice Stefan G. Sarafianos RNA viruses are highly successful pathogens and are the causative agents for many important diseases. To fully understand the replication of these viruses it is necessary to address the roles of both positive-strand RNA ((+)RNA) and negative-strand RNA ((−)RNA), and their interplay with viral and host proteins. Here we used branched DNA (bDNA) fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to stain both the abundant (+)RNA and the far less abundant (−)RNA in both hepatitis C virus (HCV)- and Zika virus-infected cells, and combined these analyses with visualization of viral pro...

In the present study, rare-earth upconverting microparticles were explored as possible antigen carriers with adjuvant properties by using a peptid...
