A Fuzzy Cause of Hip Pain

A healthy 40-year-old woman presented to the hospital with severe right hip pain. She reported a three-year history of dull pain in her right lateral hip that worsened with movement. A radiograph of the hip taken three months ago showed a well-defined calcific density adjacent to the acetabulum (Figure 1). Approximately 10 days ago, the hip pain suddenly worsened without any preceding trauma or injury. She was seen in an emergency department and diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis. Celecoxib was prescribed but she was unable to obtain this medication due to the need for a prior authorization.
