Candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms and thromboembolism in acute lymphoblastic leukemia – A NOPHO ALL2008 study

Thromboembolism is a serious toxicity of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment, and contributes to substantial morbidity and mortality. Several single nucleotide polymorphisms have been associated with thromboembolism in the general population; however, their impact in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, particularly in children, remains uncertain.

Conclusion Our study demonstrated that children with ALL have increased levels of apoptotic, platelet-derived, endothelial-derived, and tissue factor-positive microprticles during induction therapy. Symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) is an unpredictable and life-threatening toxicity, which occurs early in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) therapy. Approximately 5% of children will experience VTE which is treated with anticoagulation.
