The Irish National Histopathology Quality Improvement Programme: an overview

The National Quality Improvement Programme in Histopathology was launched in January 2009 as a matter of priority following high-profile cancer misdiagnosis cases in Ireland. The purpose of the programme is to document and improve the accuracy, consistency and quality of service with the aim of improving patient safety and enhancing patient care. Currently, 32 laboratories participate in the programme and contribute to the dataset. Every year an annual report is composed of anonymised, national data collected from the reporting tool, the National Quality Assurance and Improvement System (NQAIS).
