Excess weight loss in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with an SGLT- 2 inhibitor.

We present a 62-year-old obese male patient with a 12-year history of type 2 diabetes and poor glycemic control: HbA1c 12% (108 mmol/mol). Patient was admitted to Diabetology Department to optimize diabetes treatment. After diabetes treatment modification (among others an SGLT -2 inhibitor adding) we observed excess weight loss - 21 kg within 180 days. In our opinion, progressive weight loss can not be associated with the change in lifestyle or the increase in physical activity but with the mechanism of drug action. Does it result from the hyper-reactivity of SGLT-2 or the mechanism of drug action that has not been discovered yet? PMID: 31681978 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
