Fecal Microbiota Taxonomic Shifts in Chinese Multiple Myeloma Patients Analyzed by Quantitative Polimerase Chain Reaction (QPCR) and 16S rRNA High-Throughput Sequencing.

CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the imbalanced composition and diversity of the gastrointestinal microbiome in MM patients, which could be further used as a potential biomarker for MM risk screening, therapeutic strategies, and prognostic prediction. PMID: 31678982 [PubMed - in process]

To support the development of a COVID-19 management guideline, we conducted a systematic review that addressed the benefits and harms of 7 antiviral treatments for COVID-19. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed and 3 Chinese databases (CNKI, WA...

Abstract Mortality statistics due to COVID-19 worldwide are compared, by adjusting for the size of the population and the stage of the pandemic. Data from the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and Our World in Data websites were used. Analyses are based on number of deaths per one million inhabitants. In order to account for the stage of the pandemic, the baseline date was defined as the day in which the 10th death was reported. The analyses included 78 countries and territories which reported 10 or more deaths by April 9. On day 10, India had 0.06 deaths per million, Belgium had 30.46 and San Marino 618....

CONCLUSIONS: Mean AA was highest for the push-up technique, followed by the pull-away technique, the minus-lens technique, the modified push up technique, and dynamic retinoscopy. The push-up and pull-away methods and dynamic retinoscopy showed a significant difference in measurement of AA between sexes. PMID: 32495530 [PubMed - in process]

Abstract Mangrove sediments act as an important natural sink and a secondary source for trace metals. The main objective of this study was to investigate metal contamination and its relationship to mangrove-derived carbohydrates in mangrove sediments. Sixteen metals (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Sr, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, Tl, and Pb)were analyzed in the surface sediments from four sites at different latitudes on the southeast coastline of China. The sedimentary organic matter was characterized by Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and the neutral sugars were examined by gas chromatograph mass spectrometry. Our results from the...

Conclusions In conclusion, articles in this Research Topic made a very significant contribution to our understanding of the role played by environmental factors, dysbiotic conditions, and infections in triggering diseases. Since this is a rapidly expanding area of research, many other factors contributing to the onset of these diseases are not covered here. We are confident, however, that further studies will expand the list as well as bring a better understanding of mechanisms involved in the onset of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Author Contributions All authors listed have made a substantial, direct and i...

Background: Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) remains a standard of care for patients with high-risk and recurrent diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DCLBL), T cell lymphoma (TCL) and multiple myeloma (MM). The discovery that differences in the composition of the gut microbiome contribute to the heterogeneity of response to chemotherapies or immunotherapies has prompted us to investigate the influence of the gut microbiome on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival in these patient populations treated with combined nivolumab (Nivo) and ipilimumab (Ipi) in the post-ASCT consolidation setting. Methods: Long...
