Campos Rosa Tundis Cheng-Bi Cui Young Ho Cho Hui Cao The effect of Rhodiola sachalinensis Boriss extract irradiated with 50 kGy gamma rays (HKC) on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was investigated. Seven-week-old male SD rats received a subcutaneous injection of 20 mg/kg of testosterone propionate (TP) to induce BPH. Then, the testosterone only group received testosterone, the testosterone + finasteride group received testosterone and finasteride (5 mg/kg), the testosterone + HKC group received testosterone and HKC extract (500 mg/kg). Prostate weight and the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in serum or prostate tissue were determined. The mRNA expressions of 5-alpha reductase (AR) in prostate tissue were also measured. Compared to the control group, prostate weight was significantly improved in the TP group and decreased in the HKC and finasteride-treated groups. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of 5-AR in the prostate was significantly reduced in the HKC and finasteride-treated groups. Similarly, the expression levels of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and cytokeratin, which are associated with prostatic enla...

Authors: Guan Z, Song Y, Ma J, Li F, Zhao X, Liang G, An H, Pu J Abstract Long non-coding (lnc)RNA NCK1 antisense RNA 1 (NCK1-AS1) has been characterized as an oncogene in cervical cancer, while its role in prostate cancer (PC) remains unknown. It was revealed in the present study that plasma NCK1-AS1 was upregulated in patients with PC when compared with patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and healthy controls. Upregulation of NCK1-AS1 distinguished patients with PC from patients with BPH and healthy controls. Overexpression of NCK1-AS1 led to significantly upregulated transforming growth factor (TGF)...

This study investigated the protein expression profile of STC1 in PCa and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) samples and STC1 signalling during cell proliferation and cell death in vitro using cell lines. We found higher levels of STC1 in PCa when compared to BPH tissue and that STC1 inhibited forskolin stimulation of cAMP in PC-3 cells. A monoclonal antibody against STC1 was effective in reducing cell proliferation, in promoting cell cycle arrest, and in increasing apoptosis in the same cells. Since STC1 acts as a regulator of prostatic tissue signalling, we suggest that this protein is a novel candidate biomarker for p...

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate whether prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) could be recommended as a routine therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), we conducted an updated meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety of PAE compared with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).MethodsSystematic literature retrieval by searching data from Web of science, Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrial.gov, CNKI, Wanfang and VIP databases was carried out to identify all related trials from the inception dates to June 2019. We also conducted subgroup analyses depending on the kind of study design, kind o...

ConclusionsIt was observed that extracts of S. hexaphylla inhibited both 5α -reductase type 2 and ARs. The results indicate that the use of S. hexaphylla extract in BPH is probably beneficial through 5α-reductase inhibition and α-adrenergic receptor blockade. In addition, apoptosis and autophagy were induced, and PCNA was downregulated after S. hexaphylla treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that S. hexaphylla has a therapeutic effect on BPH.Graphical abstract

Purpose of review To summarize recent publications on the topic of laser in urology and explore new developments which may impact the future role of lasers in surgery. Recent findings Ho: Yttrium-aluminium garnet (YAG) laser with Moses technology allows less retropulsion during a lithotripsy, yet its efficacy needs to be tested in clinical trials. Data on the efficacy of this device for benign prostatic obstruction treatment is also pending. A new promising generation of laser systems – thulium-fiber (Tm-fiber) lasers – has been introduced. Tm-fiber has already been shown to be effective and well tolerated...

Abstract Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease in older men, and there is evidence that obesity is a causal factor. It is currently unclear whether the hormone leptin, which is positively correlated to obesity, is involved in BPH. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of leptin on testosterone-induced BPH in mice and to explore possible underlying mechanisms. Testosterone (3 mg/kg) was injected into wild-type and leptin-deficient ob/ob male mice for 14 consecutive days, and prostate tissues were subjected to various analyses. Additionally, BPH epithelial-1 (BPH-1) cells were treated...

Conclusions: Patients with benign adrenocortical tumors had higher odds of detected pancreatic IPMN, as well as thyroid nodules, parathyroid tumors, benign breast masses, and prostate hyperplasia compared with patients with normal adrenal glands. These associations may have important implications for patient care and healthcare economics, regardless of whether they reflect incidental discoveries due to imaging detection or frequency bias, or a common risk for developing multiple neoplasia.
