Combined Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Approach for Tension Gastrothorax in a Foramen of Bochdalek Hernia

ConclusionWe strongly recommend employing a combined laparoscopic and thoracoscopic approach for an emergency repair of a tension gastrothorax in a hemodynamically stable patient as, it poses all the advantages of minimal access surgery and is available, at smaller centres, even in an emergency.

In this study, we developed an ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer model wherein the biceps muscle of a mouse was re-innervated using a donor ulnar nerve. Similar muscle action potentials were detected in both the end-to-end suture of the transected nerve (correctrepair) group and the ulnar-musculocutaneous nerve-transfer group. Also, re-innervated acetylcholine receptor (AChR) clusters and muscle spindles were observed in both procedures. There were fewer re-innervated AChR clusters in the nerve transfer group than in the correct repair group at 4 weeks, but the numbers were equal at 24 weeks following surgery. Thus, ou...

Publication date: Available online 4 December 2019Source: Joint Bone SpineAuthor(s): Chang-Fu Kuo, Patricia B. Burns, Jung-Sheng Chen, Lu Wang, Kevin C. ChungAbstractObjective: The purpose of the study is to investigate the risk of preventable hospitalization among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods: We identified 11,852 incident RA patients and 59,260 age-, sex-, and index year-matched controls from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. Index date was the RA diagnosis date for cases, which was assigned to their matched controls. The odds ratios (OR) of preventable hospitalizations between RA patients...

This study mainly explored the mechanism of TRPC5 gene in the treatment of spinal cord ischemia reperfusion injury from the perspective of angiogenesis. Western blot, immunohistochemistry, hematoxylin and eosin, ELISA, and reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) were used to detect the expression levels of related angiogenic proteins such as von Willebrend factor (vWF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), CD31, and HIF-1α. The results showed that compared with the IR group, the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores of IR + adeno-associated virus (AAV) + TRPC5 group were higher with significant difference. And compar...

Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and impairment of the central corticotropin-releasing factor system are factors in the pathogenesis of depression. Though several antagonists of the corticotropin-releasing factor 1 receptor were effective in the recognized behavioral tests for antidepressant activity, there is still little information on the potential interactions between corticotropin-releasing factor 1 receptor inhibitors and conventional antidepressant therapy. The aim of our study was to assess the influence of CP154526, a corticotropin-releasing factor 1 receptor blocker, which presented some s...

Light-induced retinal degeneration (LIRD) models are used to recapitulate the pathologies of retinal diseases that affect photoreceptors. Current LIRD models use a dark-adaptation period of 7–14 days followed by high-intensity light exposure. The purpose of this study was to determine whether photoreceptor damage and death would occur in pigmented zebrafish using a short period of dark-adaptation. Zebrafish were dark-adapted for 24 h and then exposed to constant high-intensity light for 48 h. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on vertical retinal sections to assess damage and apoptosis. Photoreceptors exhibit...

In this study, the effects of berberine on rotenone-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells were investigated. The results showed that berberine treatment significantly alleviated rotenone-induced decrease in the cell viability in SH-SY5Y cells. Further studies demonstrated that berberine suppressed the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, restored the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, increased Bcl-2/Bax ratio, and decreased caspase-3 activation that induced by rotenone. Furthermore, berberine also restored the phosphorylation of Akt, which was downregulated by rotenone in SH-SY5Y cells. These results ...

The long noncoding RNA, steroid receptor RNA activator (SRA), has been reported to be involved in the development of many types of disease in humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether SRA was associated with poststroke depression (PSD). A PSD rat model was established, and depression-like behaviors and sucrose consumption in rats with PSD were analyzed. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-PCR), western blot and luciferase dual reporter assay analyses were performed to detect the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) expression following SRA small interfering RNA (...

Conclusions: This study suggests that the transition from the right laparoscopic colectomy with extracorporeal anastomosis to the robot-assisted right colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis when performed by a surgeon with experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery may not entail any increase on the morbidity rate or reduce the oncologic quality of the resection. Conclusions: Surgical smoke in minimally invasive gynecologic procedures contains several hazardous hydrocarbons including formaldehyde. Built-in-filter ports have the potential to reduce the exposure of surgical smoke to surgeons and operating room personnel; nevertheless, development of built-in-filter ports is necessary to improve the filtering efficiency for highly concentrated formaldehydes.
