Perinatal outcome in women with bacterial sepsis: A cross-sectional study from West China

This study was performed to analyze perinatal prognosis and related factors of maternal bacterial sepsis in west China. We conducted a cross-sectional study of pregnant women with bacterial sepsis who were admitted into a tertiary care center in western China between 2011and 2015. Data from these cases were collected and analyzed. Eighty six women were identified with bacterial sepsis in our hospital, and the incidence of maternal bacterial sepsis was 1.7 per 1000 maternities, the incidence of septic shock was 1.8 per 10,000 maternities, and 1 maternal death occurred. Among the 86 pregnant women with bacterial sepsis, genital tract infection was the most common source of infection (41/86, 47.7%). The most common bacteria in the Gram-positive bacteria group was Listeria monocytogenes and in the Gram-negative bacteria group was Escherichia coli. The premature delivery rate (65.7%) was substantially higher in the Gram-negative bacteria group (P = .011), and the miscarriage rate (31.3%) was higher in the Gram-positive bacteria group (P = .042). The fetal/neonatal mortality rate was 20% (21/105) and higher in the Gram-positive bacteria group (P = .008), and the infant mortality rate in 1 year was 7.1% (6/84). Bacterial sepsis remains an alarming cause of both maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, and infant mortality. Key treatment involves a multi-disciplinary group of clinicians with experience in all aspects of the care of pregnant women with sepsis and ear...

Conclusion: The voucher programme enhanced uptake of the complete continuum of maternal care and the benefits extended to the most vulnerable women. However, a lack of continued transition through the continuum of maternal care was identified. This insight can assist in designing effective interventions to prevent intermittent or interrupted care-seeking. Programmes that improve access to quality healthcare in pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period can have wide-ranging benefits. A coherent continuum-based approach to understanding maternal care-seeking behaviour is thus expected to have a greater impact on materna...

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor is a malignancy derived from the chorionic laeve-type intermediate trophoblast with sufficient rarity that the vast majority of literature on the topic exists in the form of case reports and small series. Classically, it is regarded as a well-circumscribed tumor with an expansile growth pattern that occurs in reproductive-aged women, usually after a normal pregnancy. However, we recently encountered a case of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor with aggressive spread throughout the abdomen and pelvis in a 68-yr-old female presenting 30 yr after her last delivery. Although to our knowledge...

This study seeks to address this. 51 professionally produced stillbirth memento photographs have been sampled, anonymised and analysed. Using a content analysis methodology, imagery was characterised by aesthetic and semantic properties. The results were then cross-referenced against existing stillbirth scholarship, data from an interview study with people who had experienced pregnancy loss, and against image theories. The content analysis identified four distinctive image tropes in the sample: images of mother, father and baby, with the baby being held and the parents touching; macro photography of the baby; portrait phot...

This study was aimed at reviewing the status of research on liver injury due to PM, including clinical characteristics, risk factors, material basis research and mechanism of action, with a view to understanding PM-induced hepatotoxicity, and taking reasonable and effective measures to prevent it. In short, quality control is still one of the major safety problems in TCM drug safety concerns. The model of safety monitoring and risk management of PM drugs is not yet developed. Indeed, the characteristics and risk factors associated with PM require both proper understanding and control of the risk by strengthening standardiz...

Conclusion: A family history of diabetes in first-degree relatives is independently associated with a rapid decline in eGFR in the current relatively young studied patients. Our findings suggested that early diagnosis and treatment is important for these patients.
