Comparative analysis of post-earthquake fires in Japan from 1995 to 2017 - Himoto K.

Post-earthquakes fires are high-consequence events, which may cause extensive damage once occurred. However, their nature has not been fully investigated as they are low-frequency events at the same time. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the fire s...

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are a rare single spectrum of severe epidermolytic reactions that can involve the vulva, vagina, and cervix. Description of specific management techniques for vulvovaginal SJS/TEN in the literature is sparse. This is a retrospective review of women treated at  a tertiary care burn center for SJS/TEN with vulvovaginal involvement.

Physicians taking care of pediatric burn patients should be familiar with the concept of judicious fluid resuscitation and careful use of beta ‐blocker in severe burn with concern of myocardial depression. AbstractCardiac stress is a critical determinant of outcomes associated with severe thermal injury. The cardiovascular response to a catecholamine ‐mediated surge from severe burns passes through two phases. Initial hypovolemia with myocardial depression leads to a low cardiac output, which then progresses to a hyperdynamic‐hypermetabolic phase with increased cardiac output.

Forests are important dynamic systems which are widely affected by fire worldwide. Due to the complexity and non-linearity of the forest fire problem, employing hybrid evolutionary algorithms is a logical task to achieve a reliable approximation of this en...

Background: Little is known about the efficacy of newer skin substitute scaffolds to reconstruct complex lower extremity wounds. The investigators present a multihospital experience of reconstructive surgeons utilizing collagen-GAG bilayer wound matrix in lower extremity soft-tissue reconstruction with the goals to (1) characterize a suitable patient population, (2) categorize failures to optimize patient selection, and (3) determine wound factors affecting success. Methods: Subjects underwent collagen-GAG–based lower extremity wound reconstruction from May of 2010 to June of 2017. The primary outcome variable w...

This article examines how the initial absence of scientific data on the physiologic effects of flamethrowers led to an inaccurate understanding of their let hality, and bizarre claims that one of history’s most horrific instruments of war was considered one of the more “humane” weapons on the battlefield.

This study describes the clinical profile and recovery pattern of swallowing following inhalation burn injury. All patients admitted 2008 –2017 with confirmed inhalation burns on laryngoscopy and managed by speech-language pathology (SLP) were included. Initial dysphagia presentation and dysphagia recovery pattern were documented using the FOIS. Co-presence of dysphonia was determined clinically and rated present/absent. Persistent laryngeal/pharyngeal injury at 6 months was documented using laryngoscopy. Data were compared to published data from a large adult burn cohort. All patients with confirmed inhalation ...

This study aims to identify risk factors for the development of ACS in the pediatric population.MethodsWe included studies comprised of pediatric patients with traumatic ACS. We excluded studies evaluating compartment syndrome secondary to exertion, vascular insult, abdominal processes, burns, and snake bites. Heterogeneity was addressed by subgroup analysis, and whenever it remained significant, we utilized a random-effects meta-analysis for data pooling. The protocol has been registered at PROSPERO (ID  = CRD42019126603).ResultsWe included nine studies with 380,411 patients, of which 1144 patients were diag...
