Authors: Albayati A, Ozkan B, Atilgan AO, Sencelikel T, Uysal CA, Ertas NM Abstract Recently, most of the immediate breast reconstructions following mastectomy are being carried out with the use of silicone implants. In these patients, methylene blue is being used for the detection of sentinel lymph nodes. This experimental study was performed to determine the effect of methylene blue on capsular contracture around breast implants. Thirty-two Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups. Custom made silicone blocks were placed on the back of animals. In group 1, the incision was closed without performing any addi...

“Silicone breast implants are the most widely used medical devices for breast reconstruction and augmentation, and revision, but even after more than 60 years of use they are associated with multiple continued complications. Using advancement in current technologies, researchers are attempting to create an optimal implant surface for patients. Through these efforts, plastic surgeons and material researchers have made great progress in the field of implant research. Multimodal techniques for the functional modification of implant surfaces will contribute to further the development of ideal b iomaterials useful in breast implants.

AbstractAutoimmune syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) is the spectrum of diseases in which the substances considered inert to the body induce autoimmune reactions and inflammation. Some of the biomaterials recently used in plastic surgery, such as silicone or polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG) seem to trigger clinical features of ASIA. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of these features within a group of women after breast augmentation with PAAG. As many as 30 consecutive patients (26 –59 years, mean age 39.5) referred to the Clinic of Plastic Surgery after breast enhancement with PAAG were examine...

Patients choosing aesthetic surgery are asymptomatic individuals opting for surgery. Psychologists and surgeons have been interested in identifying characteristics of these individuals ’ pre-operative as well as post-operative changes. It was identified that a small number of patients have a primary issue with self-body image, which resulted in altered perceptions and attitudes such that the preoccupation with perceived deficiencies continued even after surgery. The recommended course is to attempt to screen for the mental well being, as surgery alone does not improve the patient symptoms.

This study aims to better understand adequate follow-up criteria.MethodAll female patients undergoing aesthetic breast augmentation and breast MRI in its follow-up conducted from April 2006 to December 2019 were included in this study. The variables analyzed were age, breast implant surgery date, time with the implant, reason for the examination, and the final examination report. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to search for the predictors of positive findings in MRI. A Cox Regression analysis and cumulative risk curves, controlled by age, was performed to investigate the relationship between time with implant...

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of BellaGel implants after implantation in Asian women and inform surgeons of another option for use in breast augmentation and reconstruction. This study was conducted in eight hospitals from November 27, 2015 to April 30, 2018. All patients underwent augmentation mammoplasty or implant-based breast reconstruction with BellaGel implants. Complication rates were compared between groups, and the cumulative hazard function was compared using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.

This article introduces the plastic surgeon to the basics of high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) for screening breast implants. It describes how HRUS has become an accepted alternative to MRI for screening and diagnosis, and how plastic surgeons should use this new technology for the benefit of their patients and their practices. Basic principles, technology, and nomenclature are presented. Key steps to obtaining diagnostic images of breast implants are reviewed, including typical artifacts and sources of error. Imaging examples are presented. The article ends with a review and a step-by-step guide for plastic surgeons looki...
