Prevalence of text neck syndrome and SMS thumb among smartphone users in college-going students: a cross-sectional survey study

AbstractAimPhysical exposure during mobile phone use results in poor posture and repetitive movements of the hand and thumb cause groups of symptoms. The terms ‘text neck syndrome’ and ‘SMS thumb’ are the most common among them. Our aim was to find out the prevalence rate of text neck syndrome and SMS thumb among smartphone users in college-going students.Subjects and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted by a random sampling method from a recognized institution. A total of 113 participants, both male and female, in the age group 17 –25 years participated in this study. Participants were asked to fill in a proforma containing the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the Cornell Hand Discomfort Questionnaire (CHDQ). Descriptive statistics were used to express the prevalence rate and, for the d emographic data, the Pearson correlation coefficient was used to correlate between the NMP-Q with the NDI and CHDQ, respectively.ResultsThe mean age, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of participants were 21.15  ± 2.17 years, 160 ± 7.36 cm, 55.50 ± 13.3 kg, and 21.53 ± 5.60 kg/m2, respectively. Of the study population, 46.9% reported having pain in their neck, 42.5% reported having mild to severe disability in their neck, and 29.2% reported having pain in their thumb due to prolonged smartphone use. There ex...

Methods: This case-control study was conducted among 35 patients with primary KOA and 35 matched healthy subjects selected using convenience sampling method. Dietary intakes of alpha-tocopherol and lycopene were estimated from 24-hour dietary records. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Weste...

Discussion: Since a true short esophagus diagnosis depends on transurgical findings, pediatric surgeons should notice this entity when practicing any antireflux procedure. Laparoscopic Collis-Nissen approach is safe and efficient in these patients. PMID: 31967614 [PubMed - in process]

By GRACE CORDOVANO PhD, BCPA Being a patient or a carepartner can be a lonely, powerless place. There’s no high powered legal or lobbying team to help support you in your or your loved one’s health care journey. There’s no PR team at your beck and call. There’s no advisory board, no executive committee, no assistants, no chatbots or AI-powered technology coming to the rescue. There’s no funding or a company sponsoring your efforts. There’s no course in how to be a professional patient or carepartner. There’s no one there in the stillness and dark of the night, when you ...

ConclusionThe results of this study showed that besides physical factors such as pain radiation and disability level, which influenced the decision of patients to take the surgical option, patients who were unemployed were also more likely to choose surgery. This indicates that patients were worried about the possible impact of surgery on their employment, or on their ability to continue to work. It is important that patients be given a clear picture of the expected outcomes of their surgery, and that the information needs of patients regarding the surgery be explored and addressed.

DiscussionTrapeziectomy with LRTI for thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis provided early subjective improvements in outcomes as early as 3 months post-procedure. However, more than 6 months are required to determine objective improvements in outcomes. To obtain early patient-reported satisfactory outcomes, we should focus not on improving hand and finger strength, but on treating postoperative surgical site pain and preventing thumb stiffness.Level of evidenceIV, retrospective therapeutic study.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) evolve over years with variable rate and course. While studies have focused on understanding long-term trajectories of OA [e.g., 1], how these relate to shorter-term fluctuations in symptoms is not well-understood. Yet for many people, the lived experience of OA is recurrent fluctuations in episodic pain of varying frequency, intensity and duration; it is these episodes of increased pain and associated disability that often drive primary healthcare consultation. Historically, the term ‘exacerbation’ and ‘flare-up’ have been used interchangeably to describe sudden-onse...
