ConclusionsHypothalamic EPO plays a role in the central regulation of muscle and metabolic physiology while its decline contributes to aging and obesity physiology in a manner which is independent of peripheral EPO.

This study investigated the protein expression profile of STC1 in PCa and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) samples and STC1 signalling during cell proliferation and cell death in vitro using cell lines. We found higher levels of STC1 in PCa when compared to BPH tissue and that STC1 inhibited forskolin stimulation of cAMP in PC-3 cells. A monoclonal antibody against STC1 was effective in reducing cell proliferation, in promoting cell cycle arrest, and in increasing apoptosis in the same cells. Since STC1 acts as a regulator of prostatic tissue signalling, we suggest that this protein is a novel candidate biomarker for p...

Authors: Dahaba AA Abstract Numerous clinical conditions that have a direct effect on electroencephalography (EEG) cerebral function could also directly influence brain function monitors (BFM) indices. There is no conventional comparator technology for BFM assessment. The conventional comparator technology used as a benchmark for assessing BFMs technologies chosen by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to reflect the currently used standards in the National Health Service (NHS), was demarcated as "standard anesthetic clinical monitoring" and precisely defined as "the combi...

Authors: Zhao Z, Chang MY, Frerichs I, Zhang JH, Chang HT, Gow CH, Möller K Abstract BACKGROUND: Since bronchial abnormalities often exhibit spatial non-uniformity which may be not correctly assessed by conventional global lung function measures, regional information may help to characterize the disease progress. We hypothesized that regional air trapping during mechanical ventilation could be characterized by regional end-expiratory flow (EEF) derived from electrical impedance tomography (EIT). METHODS: Twenty-five patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD grade 3 or 4) or severe...

CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative acupuncture at HT7 and ear Shen Men did not reduce PAED scores after myringotomy tube placement. Based on these data, it is therefore unlikely that alarger study of the same design would demonstrate a significant effect of intraoperative acupuncture on emergence delirium after brief sevoflurane anesthesia. However, other acupuncture points or techniques could be considered. PMID: 31808657 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Genç Moralar D, Tok Cekmecelioglu B, Aslan M, Hergünsel GO Abstract BACKGROUND: Quadratus lumborum block (QLB) is a newly-defined trunk block performed with local anesthetic injection by imaging the abdominal muscles with ultrasonography (US) guidance; thus, analgesia is expected to be ensured from the T7-L1 dermatomal segment level. In the study, the aim was making the comparison between the quadratus lumborum block and the intravenous analgesia with tramadol on postoperative analgesic effect in pediatric patients undergoing lower abdominal surgery. METHODS: Patients included in the study ...
