Comparison of Risk Scores for the Prediction of the Overall Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: The Athens Stroke Registry

Stratification of overall vascular risk in patients with ischemic stroke is important as it may guide management decisions. Currently available schemes have only modest prognostic accuracy. The TRA2 °P score aids in vascular risk stratification in patients with previous myocardial infarction (MI).

Whole organs are difficult to study in minute detail, as they have to be sliced into extremely thin sections to map out their interior. CT and magnetic resonance imaging help to an extent, but researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, Ludwig...

This study aimed to explore the cardiologist adherence with ACC/AHA guidelines on discharge medications for patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), assess the predictors of cardiologist non-adherence and measure the impact of pharmacist intervention on improving guideline adherence.MethodsThe study included two consecutive phases: observation and intervention. It was carried out at Al-Najaf Center for Cardiac Surgery and Catheterization, Iraq, from August through December 2018. In the observation phase, medical records were reviewed retrospectively in order to assess the adherence to guideline. The interventi...

Publication date: April 2020Source: Molecular Immunology, Volume 120Author(s): Jian Du, Wei Lv, Sitong Yang, Jia Liu, Juan Zhen, Jiyan LengAbstractMyocardial infarction (MI) or heart attack is a deadly event with high prevalence. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the polypeptide copolymer glatiramer acetate (GA) in H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion injury. Immediately following MI, an acute inflammatory response is triggered that causes activation of various proinflammatory cytokines, infiltration of immune cells, and neovascularization. This response is largely me...

In this study, we examined the benefits of early-onset, lifelong AET on predictors of health, inflammation, and cancer incidence in a naturally aging mouse model. Lifelong, voluntary wheel-running (O-AET; 26-month-old) prevented age-related declines in aerobic fitness and motor coordination vs. age-matched, sedentary controls (O-SED). AET also provided partial protection against sarcopenia, dynapenia, testicular atrophy, and overall organ pathology, hence augmenting the 'physiologic reserve' of lifelong runners. Systemic inflammation, as evidenced by a chronic elevation in 17 of 18 pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokin...

Written by Pendell Meyers, edits by Steve SmithThis will be too easy for most long-time readers, but if you are at that level, sit back and enjoy noticing how few milliseconds it takes to recognize this thanks to so many prior examples on this blog!I was sent this ECG from EMS with only the information that it belonged to a middle aged male with left shoulder pain. What do you think? There are hyperacute T-waves in leads V1-V6, as well as in leads II, III, aVF. The J-points are all at baseline with the exception of leads V2-V3 which show a small amount of STD (which makes de Winter morphology in the presence of hyperacute T-...

Abstract The risk of having a first stroke is nearly twice as high among African Americans compared to Caucasians. HIV/AIDS is an independent risk factor for stroke. Our study aimed to report the risk factors and short-term clinical outcomes of African Americans with HIV infection and new-onset stroke admitted at the Johns Hopkins Hospitals (2000–2012). Multivariate linear regression was used to examine the association between potential predictors and odds of an unfavorable outcome, defined as a higher modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score on hospital discharge. African Americans comprised 105/125 (84 %) of...

Conclusions: Many unnecessary tests are obtained to evaluate syncope. Selecting tests based on history and examination and prioritizing less expensive and higher yield tests would ensure a more informed and cost-effective approach to evaluating older patients with syncope._____________________________________________________________________________4)    Reed MJ.  The ROSE (Risk Stratification of syncope in the emergency department) Study.  J Am Coll Cardiol, 2010; 55:713-721, doi:10.1016/j.jacc.2009.09.049  Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a clinical deci...
