Damage control articular surgery: maintaining chondrocyte health and minimising iatrogenic injury

Post traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) accounts for approximately 12% of the overall symptomatic osteoarthritis burden of the hip, knee or ankle, with an estimated annual healthcare cost in the United States of about $3 billion (1). The rate of PTOA following intra-articular fracture ranges from 11 to 75%, with the risk highest following tibial plafond fractures (Table 1) (2,3,4,5,6,7,8). In the UK, arthritis is the most common condition for people to receive the Disability Living Allowance and the overall burden has been estimated to cost 1% of the UK Gross National Product (9).
