Nigeria: Another Polio Strain Eradicated
[Premium Times] It is good news from the health sector as experts have announced that another strain of wild poliovirus has been eradicated globally.
(Purdue University) Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison have isolated human monoclonal antibodies that potentially can prevent a rare but devastating polio-like illness in children linked to a respiratory viral infection.

[Daily Trust] In what is obviously a major feat, Nigeria was on June 18, 2020 declared polio-free by the World Health Orgnisation. In a tweet to announce this feat, the WHO office in Nigeria said the country had completed documentation for wild polio-free status and that the documentation has been accepted by the African Regional Certification Commission for polio eradication.
Conclusions: The study showed that there was a strong correlation between right-sided thoracolumbar curve and the spread of spinal anesthesia
a C. Wolthers Enteroviruses (EVs) are highly prevalent viruses worldwide. Recombination is known to occur frequently in EVs belonging to species Enterovirus A, Enterovirus B, and Enterovirus C. Although many recombinant vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) strains have been reported, our knowledge on recombination in non-polio EVs in the species Enterovirus C is limited. Here, we combined a dataset consisting of 11 newly generated full-length Enterovirus C sequences and 180 publicly available sequences to study recombination dynamics in non-polio EVs. To identify recombination patterns, maximum likelihood phylogenetic tre...
[WHO] Brazzaville -The independent Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC), responsible for certifying the eradication of wild poliovirus in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region, is set to make its final decision about the region's wild poliovirus status in August 2020.
[WHO] Dr Fiona Braka holds one of the highest-stake roles in the African regional polio programme - supporting the Government of Nigeria in their fight to defeat wild poliovirus.
CONCLUSION: It is important to increase the immunization rates of Syrian children under temporary protection and establish regular vaccination procedures. PMID: 32592558 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
This report summarizes progress toward global polio eradication during January 1, 2018-March 31, 2020 and updates previous reports (1,2). In 2019, Afghanistan and Pakistan reported the highest number of WPV1 cases (176) since 2014. During January 1-March 31, 2020 (as of June 19), 54 WPV1 cases were reported, an approximate fourfold increase from 12 cases during the corresponding period in 2019. Paralytic poliomyelitis can also be caused by circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV), which emerges when attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) virus reverts to neurovirulence following prolonged circulation in underimmuni...
This report describes efforts to conduct polio immunization and surveillance activities and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on these efforts.
