A Resident-Based, Educational Program to Drive Individual and Institutional Improvement in a Pediatric Training Hospital
Poor resource utilization in clinical practice leads to waste, renders patients at risk of harm, and reduces available capacity for the health system as a whole.1-3 However, barriers to improving resource utilization are often complex and complicated by institutional cultural influences. These include insufficient tolerance of uncertainty; fragmented c are and transitions between clinical units and care teams; time pressure; over-emphasis on anecdotal experience; under-emphasis on adverse impacts of unnecessary testing and treatment related to concerns for rare conditions or negative outcomes; and perceived pressure from medicolegal and hospital billing perspectives.
