Cytomegalovirus intestinal disease in infants born very prematurely is likely under-recognized

In this retrospective study performed over 17 years at Nationwide Children's Hospital, 178 infants had surgical- or autopsy-confirmed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or spontaneous perforation of the small intestine, and had archived paraffin-embedded intestinal tissue specimens available for cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing using polymerase chain reaction methodology. Seven infants (4%) had CMV detected, and 5 of 6 with “surgical” NEC had gestational ages
