Grand Theories: How Far Have We Come and Where Will We Go?

President Obama's call for science to be "restored to its proper place" excites science policy advocates. Science, it appears, may play an important role in informing societal... In this study, the retrieving of gold nanoparticles from Euphorbia fischeriana root was amalgamated by standard procedure. Fabricated gold nanoparticles were portrayed through the investigations of ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV–Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The UV–Vis and FTIR results explicated the obtained particles were sphere-shaped and the terpenoids of Euphorbia fischeriana had strong communications with gold surface. The HRTEM and XRD images exposed the produced gold nanoparticles...

AbstractWe investigate the effect of tobacco control policies on smoking initiation in eleven European countries. Based on individual data about age of onset of smoking, we use hazard rate models to study smoking initiation. Thus, we are able to take into account observed and unobserved personal characteristics as well as the effect of the introduction of a variety of tobacco control policies including price and and non-price policies, i.e., bans on tobacco advertisements, smoke-free air regulation, health warnings on packages of cigarettes, and treatment programs to help smokers quit smoking. We find that higher tobacco p...

Hou, Yong Xue, Sandrine Turpault, Dan RudinAbstractEliglustat is a first-line oral therapy for adults with Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1) who have extensive (EM), intermediate (IM), or poor (PM) CYP2D6 metabolizer phenotypes. It was initially not recommended in GD1 patients with hepatic or renal impairment due to insufficient data. Two Phase 1 studies (NCT02536937/NCT02536911) evaluated the effects of hepatic and renal impairmen...

In this study, we performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. The results show that RASSF6 is upregulated in ESCC and that the elevated expression level of RASSF6 is associated with lymph node metastasis and poor survival of ESCC patients. Consistent with the clinical observations, the upregulation of RASSF6 greatly promotes ESCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion as well as the cell cycle transition to G1/S phase in vitro. According to models in vivo, the downregulation of RASSF6 considerably inhibits ESCC tumor growth and lung metastasis. Mechanistically, RASSF6 negatively regulates the tumor suppressor tripartit...

Srivastava, Ved Prakash Saini, Kuldeep K. Lal, Vindhya MohindraAbstractTor tor, Tor mahseer, an endangered cyprinid species, is important as sport fish. Genetic divergence in natural populations of T. tor was investigated using two mitochondrial genes, Cytb (Cytochrome b) and ATPase6/8. Analysis of 140 sequences of Cytb (1121 bp) and ATPase6/8genes (842 bp) genes revealed 12 and 7 haplotypes respectively, whereas 23 haplotypes were found in concate...

Abstract The genetic background of the Brazilian population is mainly characterized by three parental populations: European, African, and Native American. The aim of this study was to overview the genetic ancestry estimates for different Brazilian geographic regions and analyze factors involved in these estimates. In this systematic scoping review were included 51 studies, comprehending 81 populations of 19 states from five regions of Brazil. To reduce the potential of bias from studies with different sampling methods, we calculated the mean genetic ancestry weighted by the number of individuals. The weighted mean proporti...

Abstract Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in various cellular and pathological processes. Two lncRNAs, myocardial infarction-associated transcript (MIAT) and metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), may be involved in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). Here, we aimed to determine the relative circulating levels of MIAT and MALAT1 in 110 stable CAD patients and 117 controls and to correlate their levels with the clinical and laboratory data. Peripheral blood expression levels were quantified by Real-Time qPCR. The median MIAT expression level in CAD patients was significa...
