“Schizophrenia terrifies” (p 3). This simple, yet poignant, statement introduces the first essay in Esmé Weijun Wang’s The Collected Schizophrenias. As a psychiatrist working with children and young adults experiencing their first episode of psychosis, I can confidently say: Ms. Wang’s stat ement is accurate. Schizophrenia not only terrifies the individual it directly affects, but also those intimately surrounding the person. They often struggle to make sense of their loved one’s changes in behavior and functioning.
