A New Method for Continuous Relative Blood Volume and Plasma Sodium Concentration Estimation During Hemodialysis

Conclusion: Our system has the potential to provide accurate and important information on the state of a patient undergoing hemodialysis, while only low-cost modifications to the existing onboard sensors are required. Significance: Through improved knowledge of blood parameters during hemodialysis, our method will allow better patient monitoring and therapy customization in hemodialysis.

We report on the prespecified secondary outcome, echocardiographic indexes of LV function, from a previously reported study of the effect of lung ultrasound (US)-guided dry weight reduction on systolic blood pressure.Study DesignSingle-blind randomized trial.Settings &Participants71 clinically euvolemic hypertensive hemodialysis patients in Greece and Slovenia.InterventionThe active intervention group’s (n = 35) volume removal was guided by the total number of lung US B-lines observed every week before a midweek dialysis session. The usual-care group (n = 36) was treated using standard-of-care...

Nghiem, Xue-Mei Li, Tao HeAbstractPreparation of dialysate for hemodialysis (or dialysis) requires dilution of the dialysis concentrate with purified water. Present practice contains two steps: first to purify water, and then water is transported to clinic to mix with the dialysate concentrate before treatment. As a new forward osmosis dialysis hybrid process, based on osmotic dilution, is evaluated for decentralized health care systems. A commercial cellulose triacetate (CTA) an...

In this report, a 60 years old woman with a past medical history of significant chronic kidney disease undergoing regular hemodialysis, chronic constipation and hepatitis B was admitted to our neurology clinic because of acute intracerebral hemorrhage. She had confusion and right hemiplegia in her neurological examination and required urinary catheterization due to immobilization. Red coloration was observed in urine on the tenth hospital day. Although this coloration was thought to be hematuria, according to urine examination it was not hematuria. Then urine color turned into purple within two days. The next day, because ...

We report a case of a 59-year-old female patient with vegetative native mitral valve endocarditis caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (SM). She had hemodialysis-dependent chronic renal failure, but no immunosuppressive disease. Echocardiography showed mobile vegetation on her native mitral valve. Right femoral artery embolectomy and mitral valve replacement were performed simultaneously. She awakened from anesthesia, but she passed away due to septic shock complications. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first case in whom native mitral valve endocarditis caused by SM was observed (despite of absence of any imm...

CONCLUSIONS: Morbidity rate is higher in children with aHUS. The renal prognosis and morbidity rate is higher in children with CFH mutations than other children with aHUS. Poor prognosis in aHUS children with CFH mutation depends on the genetic background. PMID: 31705748 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion A high prevalence of malnutrition and of other risk factors for cardiovascular disease were observed. Such factors included diabetes Mellitus, smoking and former smoker conditions and were associated with malnutrition. Inaddition, it was found that malnourished individuals were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease within 10 years.RESUMO Objetivo Verificar associa ção entre estado nutricional e fatores de riscos cardiovasculares tradicionais e não tradicionais em pacientes em hemodiálise. Métodos Estudo transversal com 132 pacientes maiores de 18 anos em hemodiál...

AbstractIntroductionThe outcomes of transfemoral (TF) compared with transapical (TA) access for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in diabetics are unknown.MethodsWe queried the NIS database (2011 –2014) to identify diabetics who underwent TAVR. We performed a propensity matching analysis comparing TF-TAVR versus TA-TAVR.ResultsThe analysis included 14.555 diabetics who underwent TAVR. After matching, in-hospital mortality was not different between TF-TAVR and TA-TAVR. (3.5 vs. 4.4%,p = 0.11). TF-TAVR was associated with lower rates of cardiogenic shock (2.7 vs. 4.7%,p = 0.02), ...
