Validity, functional impairment and complications related to Internet gaming disorder in the DSM-5 and gaming disorder in the ICD-11.

CONCLUSION: The 'deceiving' and 'escapism' criteria had relatively lower diagnostic accuracy. Both the Internet gaming disorder and gaming disorder groups demonstrated functional impairments and unhealthy behaviors. They also exhibited complications, such as obesity and sleep disorders. These results support the utility of the DSM-5 Internet gaming disorder and ICD-11 gaming disorder criteria in identifying individuals who need treatment for both gaming addiction symptoms and complications resulting from the addiction. (Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University) Eight months of daily, afterschool physical activity in previously inactive 8- to 11-year-olds with obesity and overweight improved key measures of their cardiovascular health like good cholesterol levels, aerobic fitness and percent body fat, but didn't improve others like arterial stiffness, an early indicator of cardiovascular risk, Medical College of Georgia investigators report.

We examined the effects of the independent and combined effects of Zataria Multiflora supplementation and circuit resistance training (CRT) on selected adipokines among postmenopausal women. Forty-eight postmenopausal women were divided into four groups: Exercise (EG, n = 12), Zataria Multiflora (ZMG, n = 12), exercise and Zataria Multiflora (ZMEG, n = 12), and control (CG, n = 12). Participants in experimental groups either performed CRT (3 sessions per week with intensity at 55% of one-repetition maximum) or supplemented with Zataria Multiflora (500 mg every day after breakfast with 100 ml of water), or their combination...

(Video Via TheUrbanMonk.com) How important is sleep? Media mogul, author, and actor Arianna Huffington learned the answer to this question the hard way, in the form of a broken cheek bone. Arianna's dedication to raising her daughters and creating the Huffington Post had led her, like many of us, to forego sleep. Her sleep deprivation then caused her to collapse and injure herself-- a literal wake up call that convinced her it was time to make a change. Through sleep research, Arianna has learned that sleep is equally, if not more, important to success as hard work. Her new book, "The Sleep Revolution: Transform...

Like millions of Americans, I have an uneasy relationship with sleep, and I've spent the past year really digging into this under-appreciated aspect of our lives. I have dreamed up a new way of assembling research, data, new technologies and resources to help provide people with useful information so they can sleep soundly and feel better. (It's called "Sleep School." More on that below.) It is amazing how much of our society's attention has been obsessed with food and nutrition and countless diet fads in the past few decades. Even fitness has had its 15 minutes of fame -- from half-marathons to Pilates to perso...

Kids’ sleep is truly precious. For parents, hardly anything beats the sight of their little one wrapped in a blanket, curls strewn over the pillow, breathing softly and looking happy and serene. But what if your child is tossing and turning, snoring or moaning in her sleep? How will the quality of her nighttime rest affect how she fares socially, emotionally and academically? These were some of the questions that leading medical professionals discussed at SLEEP 2015, which took place in Seattle in June. Underscoring the importance of children’s sleep, the conference added to a wave of newly released research th...
