PhD Researchers in the Business Sector : Domestic and Foreign Employment and Industry-Level Characteristics of Domestic R & D

R&D is performed globally by multinational enterprises ( MNEs ) and other businesses engaged in foreign investment or international trade. However, compared with other MNE activities, R&D by MNEs based in high-income countries is more concentrated in the home country. This InfoBrief presents new information on domestic versus foreign distribution of PhD researchers by U.S.-located companies that is consistent with these observations. Data are from the Business R&D and Innovation Survey, conducted by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation and by the U.S. Census Bureau.
