Synthesis and characterization of new disulfoxides, and their Ru complexes

Publication date: Available online 18 October 2019Source: Inorganica Chimica ActaAuthor(s): Elizabeth L.S. Cheu, Donald T.T. Yapp, Lynsey Huxham, Brian O. Patrick, Brian R. JamesAbstractReported are the syntheses of ten, new disulfoxides, and four known ones, of the type R-S(O)-CH2)n-(O)S-R (n = 2 or 3, R = alkyl) that were formed by oxidizing the corresponding dithioethers, RS(CH2)nSR, using acid solutions of DMSO or H2O2 as oxidants. The disulfoxides were then reacted with either commercial RuCl3٠H2O, K3(RuCl6), or the so-called Ru ‘Blue’ or ‘Red’ solutions, in aqueous or alcohol (MeOH, EtOH) solution from which various S-bonded sulfinyl complexes of the type cis or trans-RuIICl2(disulfoxide)2, [RuIICl2(disulfoxide)(H2O)]2(μ-Cl)2, and [Ru2II/IIICl(disulfoxide)]2(μ-Cl)3 were isolated; all three types are well characterized, including X-ray data. One RuIII complex, formulated RuCl3(BPhSE)]2(μ–BPhSE) with the bridging disulfoxide 1,2-bis(phenylsulfinyl)ethane, is also synthesized, but less well characterized.Graphical abstract
