Endobronchial Small-cell Lung Cancer with Intraluminal Growth Pattern Showing "Finger-in-glove" Appearance. Intern Med. 2019 Nov 08;: Authors: Kitahara Y, Murakami Y, Nakai S, Hiramatsu T, Kishimoto Y, Nihashi F, Aono Y, Eifuku T, Uto T, Sato J, Imokawa S, Suda T Abstract Invasion of the endobronchial mucosa by cancer cells is frequently seen in small cell lung cancer (SCLC), but an intraluminal polypoid growth pattern is extremely rare. We herein describe the case of a 69-year-old woman with limited-stage SCLC who had a pedunculated mass in the orifice of the right upper bronchus. Thin-secti...

This study aimed to analyze AS prognostic factors in a large nationwide cohort of histologically confirmed cases, established through linkage of clinical data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry and pathology data from the Dutch pathology registry (PALGA). All cases were reviewed by an expert pathologist, showing a 16% discordance rate. Multivariable Cox regression survival analysis among 479 confirmed AS patients revealed remarkably poorer overall survival (OS) for primary AS compared to secondary AS (7 vs 21 months, Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.2–1.9). Age above 65 years, male gend...

AbstractReproducible patient positioning is essential for precision in radiation therapy (RT) delivery. We tested the hypothesis that a structured daily pre-treatment stretching regimen is both feasible and effective for minimizing variability in positioning, as measured by sacral slope angles (SSA). Eight female subjects undergoing pelvic radiotherapy performed a structured daily hip exercise regimen (extension and external rotation) immediately prior to both simulation imaging and daily treatment, throughout their RT course. This exercising cohort was compared to a retrospective review of 20 subjects (17 women and 3 men)...

In recent years, advanced radiation therapy techniques, including stereotactic body radiotherapy and carbon–ion radiotherapy, have progressed to such an extent that certain types of cancer can be treated with radiotherapy alone. The therapeutic outcomes are particularly promising for early stage lung cancer, with results matching those of surgical resection. Nevertheless, patients may still experience local tumor recurrence, which might be exacerbated by the acquisition of radioresistance after primary radiotherapy. Notwithstanding the risk of tumors acquiring radioresistance, secondary radiotherapy is increasingly u...

heul Oh Dae-Hee Lee Despite the importance of radiation therapy, there are few radiation-related markers available for use in clinical practice. A larger catalog of such biomarkers is required to help clinicians decide when radiotherapy should be replaced with a patient-specific treatment. Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOX-1) enzyme is involved in polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism. When colorectal cancer (CRC) cells were exposed to radiation, 15-LOX-1 was upregulated. To verify whether 15-LOX-1 protects against or induces DNA damage, we irradiated sh15-LOX-1 stable cells. We found that low 15-LOX-1 is correlat...

AbstractProstate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the USA. Interestingly, recent studies suggest that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of developing prostate cancer. Importantly, patients with IBD who develop prostate cancer require thoughtful care when using immunosuppressants to treat the IBD in the setting of malignancy. Further, consideration must be given to the proximity of the prostate to the gastrointestinal tract when treating with radiation where there is concern for the effects of inadvertent exposure of radiation to the diseased bowel. In general, management of i...
