Ultrasound Does Not Detect Acute Changes in Glycogen in Vastus Lateralis of Man
Purpose To examine the validity of ultrasound (via cloud-based software that measures pixilation intensity according to a scale of 0–100) to noninvasively assess muscle glycogen in human skeletal muscle. Methods In study 1, 14 professional male rugby league players competed in an 80-min competitive rugby league game. In study 2 (in a randomized repeated measures design), 16 recreationally active males completed an exhaustive cycling protocol to deplete muscle glycogen followed by 36 h of HIGH or LOW carbohydrate intake (8 g·kg−1 vs 3 g·kg−1 body mass). In both studies, muscle biopsies and ultrasound scans were obtained from the vastus lateralis (at 50% of the muscle length) before and after match play in study 1 and at 36 h after glycogen depletion in study 2. Results Despite match play reducing (P

ConclusionsGiant parathyroid adenoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and usually presents symptomatically with high calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. Giant parathyroid adenoma is diagnosed by imaging and laboratory studies. Management is typically surgical, aiming at complete resection. Patients usually recover with no long-term complications or recurrence.
ConclusionMesenteric cysts represent a rare cause of intra-abdominal mass. Owing to low prevalence, literature is limited as is guidance on management. Careful pre-operative planning is essential so as to avoid operative complications. Imaging such as USS is of great importance; however Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be of more benefit, owing to the complex anatomical relations within which mesenteric cysts can present. Surgical excision is widely reported as the surgical treatment of choice for symptomatic cysts
ConclusionSurvival of fat cell grafts and the breast lipofilling complication depends on the techniques used to harvest and then injecting the fat into the receiver site. However, the preliminary results should be confirmed in larger series, and the radiographic follow-up of women undergoing breast lipofilling should be standardized to ensure reproducibility and improve patient safety.Level of evidenceLevel V, therapeutic study.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of carotid artery stenosis (CAS) using carotid duplex ultrasound in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: This retrospective study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2018 and included 166 consecutive patients [130 males (78.31%), 36 females (21.69%); mean age: 64.25 ±9.78 years] who underwent elective and isolated CABG. Patients who had significant CAS ( ≥ 50% stenosis) were compared with patients who had non-significant CAS (
ConclusionsNeither MRI nor US showed satisfactory diagnostic test accuracy in detecting bone erosion. However, the 1.5-T Signa MRI system, General Electric ©, and different models of LOGIQ US units and General Electric© showed similarly good performance in detecting bone erosion in RA patients, while the 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint is the best recommended scanning position during US.Key Points:• In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of US and MRI for bone erosion in RA patients, neither MRI nor US showed perfect diagnostic test accuracy.• 1.5-T Signa system and the LOGIQ units both from ...
Technological improvements and growing sonographers ’ expertise boost the role of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) in assessing patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Non-invasiveness, low cost and good reproducibility make IUS attractive.Leveraging on the Authors’ long-term field experience, this review focuses on the IUS role in IBD patien ts’ clinical management. For detecting IBD, particularly Crohn’s disease, the IUS parameters — above all the evidence of a thickened bowel wall (BWT) — show very good diagnostic accuracy similar to that of MRI or CT scan.

meyer M Abstract AIM: To investigate the value of I-124 positron emission tomography (PET) / ultrasound (US) fusion imaging in comparison to conventional diagnostics (CD) of Thyroid nodules (TN) by multiple observers. METHODS: Digital patient case files (PCF) of patients that received CD and I-124-PET/US in clinical routine were prepared containing cine-loops of the examinations. All physicians with nuclear medicine specialty from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland were invited to participate. 106 acquired observers completed 7.2 ± 1.8 (median: 8, range: 4-14) randomly assigned PCF (CD o...
