AbstractThe use of psychotropic drugs (antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine-related drugs, and antidepressants) is common, with a prevalence estimates range of 19 –29% among community dwelling older adults. These drugs are often prescribed for off-label use, including neuropsychiatric symptoms. The older adult population also has high rates of pneumonia and some of these cases may be associated with adverse drug events. In this narrative review, we summariz e the findings from current observational studies on the association between psychotropic drug use and pneumonia in older adults. In addition to stu...

When taken daily, preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). PrEP is an important tool for preventing HIV among persons at substantial risk for HIV infection, including female sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender women, and persons who inject drugs.

Authors: Rahim MA, Zaman S, Amin MR, Uddin KN, Ma JC Abstract Histoplasmosis is uncommon in many parts of the world, including Bangladesh, where, in recent years, cases are increasingly reported. We sought to describe the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical presentation, investigations, treatment, and outcome of histoplasmosis in Bangladesh. We conducted a retrospective data review of published literature from 1962 to 2017, containing information on histoplasmosis in and/or from Bangladesh. Unpublished, well-documented histoplasmosis cases were also included. A total of 26 male patients aged 8-75 years, with...

ConclusionsThe differential antagonism of rate ‐decreasing and hypothermic effects implicates differential involvement of nAChR subtypes. The decreased capacity of mecamylamine and DHβE to antagonize nicotine during chronic nicotine treatment may indicate that their effectiveness as smoking cessations might vary as a function of nicotine tole rance and dependence.

Conclusions: PLWH with mood disorders were at increased risk of incident NCDs and multimorbidity, particularly metabolic syndrome. Focused prevention and treatment of NCDs may reduce the burden of multimorbidity in this high-risk group.

Conclusions: The findings from the present study indicate that children with sensorineural hearing loss are able to capitalize on acoustic differences between speech produced by male and female talkers when asked to recognize target words in a competing speech masker. However, children with hearing loss experienced a smaller benefit relative to their peers with normal hearing. No association between the sex-mismatch benefit and measures of unaided thresholds or aided audibility were observed for children with hearing loss, suggesting that reduced peripheral encoding is not the only factor responsible for the smaller sex-...

Conclusions: The accuracy of the EDI as an indicator of nonlinear distortion for sentence materials can be improved by equalizing the long-term spectrum of the processed signal to match that of the unprocessed input. However, the EDI does not have a clear interpretation because of the confound between linear and nonlinear processing effects and the lack of an auditory model in calculating the signal differences.
